Anyone write music?

I joined TESNexus sometime ago but forgot about this site as I got sucked into my other hobbies... I was working on an album last year then got sidetracked into another one of my hobbies (programming) and now I'm kind of getting back into writing music again. I remembered this site when I read up on Skyrim, which I'm anxiously awaiting. I've thought about getting a team together and creating an action rpg, but it's going to be an insane amount of work. But anyways, since I'm trying to get back into music again I figured I'd ask if anyone writes any music?

Here's links to some songs on my "Surreal Nightmares" album, which is rock/metal/progressive/instrumental with a dark/eerie theme:

Starless Night

Into the Darkness

Unnatural Disturbance

If you write music, post some of your songs.

(copied from post #12) Here's a link to a couple other songs I wrote:

The Voyage - I originally wrote this back in 2001. I am going to include this on the Surreal Nightmares album as a bonus track because it doesn't quite fit the theme or backstory. The Voyage is supposed to be about a wicked space journey. I am going to totally rework this song, however, and make it progressive. Right now it follows a more traditional pattern and also lacks any real direction. The lead guitar that I added I threw together in about an hour. The performance needs to be tweaked and also the tone. I don't quite like the tone and feel that at a couple times during the performance, it gets a little harsh. Some of the drum fills also need work. I converted this song over to the new software and made a ton of tweaks and rushed things a bit too much, and never went back to complete the job.

The Journey Begins - This song is purely orchestral with ambience and some synth. I am working on a sci-fi novel called "Legends of Graylam" and I am writing music to go with the story. This is the first part of the story and I have not written any more music since. I wrote this back in 2007 and have yet to make further progress on the novel as well. Too much stuff is going on... not enough time. I plan to replace my current orchestral software with better software, although the software I want is about $900... needless to say I don't have the money for it currently. So eventually this song will be rewritten. It suffers from some performance, mixing and mastering issues that I never bothered to address. I will address those issues in the rework.

This is very good, I loved Starless Night. That song is like gonna be my theme song from now on :D. To me it reminded me of a song by Metallica called Call of Kthulu. If you'e never heard of that song I strongly recommend that you check it out. There is no vocals in it, just guitar. The song had a very eerie feeling on some parts. And if it did not have that feeling, I would lable it as Techno with some guitar. But that eerie feeling is what makes that song purely metal. The beginning of Into the Darkness sounds like the beginning to Slayer's Raining Blood, which is good because I liked the guitar in that song :P. 1:22 sort of freaked me out, but then at 1:35 it was like "yeah!". And Unnatural Disturbance was just a plain good song. Great job, kudos :D Edited by syndros

Wow, those are really nice! Reminds me of like a completely instrumental more recent Dream Theater track. I just love a good metal type instrumental piece.

Thanks for sharing your music!

syndros - Thanks, glad you enjoyed the tunes! Funny you mention Metallica. They're one of my favorite bands (their old stuff anyways). I would consider them an influence.

Genzel - Thanks, glad you enjoyed them too! I love instrumentals too, and I'm putting the album together as a story told through music. Also I think the songs make great soundtracks for video games or movies... I started working on a 4th song, but progress is slow. Too many things going on, not enough time.

Here's a song I wrote many years back. I do the keyboards and vocals on that recording.

Unfortunately I don't have anything more up to date at this time I am ready to release yet.

Morx may I inquire to what software your using? Personally I use Cubase 5 at this time. I got fed up with VSTs for guitars and drums, so I'm currently recording live guitars and for drums I bought a cheep kit, outfitted it with ddrum triggers and go through a Roland Td-20. Nothing finished yet but will be soon. I think your stuff sounds great. Unfortunately I have a short attention span for instrumentals for some reason :pinch:

That was a pretty rockin' tune. Very nice! I'd love to hear more.

I use Cakewalk Sonar X1 Producer Edition with the following VST's/VSTi's:

  • Kontakt 4
  • Absynth 5
  • Massive
  • Electri6ity (for the guitars)
  • Scarbee Pre-bass
  • Guitar Rig 4 Pro
  • Dimension Pro
  • Rapture
  • Superior Drummer 2.0

There may be more than that... that list is off the top of my head. Superior Drummer 2.0 is hands down one of the best acoustic drum VSTi's on the market. It's by a company called Toontrack. As for the guitars, Electri6ity is an amazing guitar VSTi by a company called Vir2 Instruments. I use Electri6ity for both the rhythm and lead guitars. What I do is layer four rhythm guitar tracks down, two hard left, two hard right, and route them each into Guitar Rig 4 Pro with different tones. I also vary the performance slightly of each guitar track. It works rather well. I wish I knew how to play the real deal, but my lack of free time really prevents me from learning on my own. However, I'm rather happy with Electri6ity. Scarbee Pre-bass is another amazing product for bass guitar emulation. I also route that into Guitar Rig 4 Pro. I use various synths from Kontakt 4, Absynth 5, Massive, Dimension Pro, Rapture, etc... to blend in and create my own style with a dark/eerie theme.

Thanks for listening and the comment! :)

Yeah I thought that sounded like Superior Drummer. While I think it's great, it just can't do some of the things I want with drums, and I wasn't entirely happy with it after mix down. If you ever do get the chance, a really easy way to run guitars is through Line 6's Pod Farm VST, to which they sell a really cheap single channel USB audio interface like the UX2, which is what I am currently recording guitars on. No mics, cabs or any of that bull.

You can hear more music I've done with others at Vintenar's Myspace

Right now I'm working on more stuff solo too.
