NPCs practicing Ranged Skills

Recommended Posts

Howdy all,

So I'm polishing my 'Aleswell Legion Lodge' mod for it's upcoming release and I've run into a problem.

My guard who is suppose to practice his ranged skill every evening doesn't always fire at the target. I know I've set it up right, because I used the Arena Blue Team guy as a rough template. I have the XMarkerHeading with a target set to the nice wooden target thingy and he does shoot in that direction, BUT, sometimes the arrows end up spawning at - what I assume is - 0, 0 in the zone. On top of that he'll every once in a while walk towards the target and look like he's going to collect arrows, but he'll turn around halfway there and go back to shooting.

Needless to say I am perplexed at the unevenness.

Thoughts anyone?

Oblivion is glitchy in this respect. Sometimes the NPCs abandon their arrows and don't collect them.

If they practice so much that their bows break, then they will throw them on the ground and draw their swords. But they realize they are supposed to be practicing archery so they sheath their swords and draw bows. But they don't have bows, so they realize that is cheating and put away their bows and draw their swords. But they realize they are supposed to be practicing archery so they sheath their swords and draw bows. But they don't have bows, so they realize that is cheating and put away their bows and draw their swords. Etc. etc. ad nauseum.

Sometimes NPCs practice archery with invisible and soundless arrows.

If you give an NPC one arrow, he will miraculously have hundreds of arrows of that kind, even if it is a rare and expensive enchanted arrow.

On the last shot before ending archery practice, NPCs often shoot totally wild and might hit another NPC, you, or something else in a totally different direction than the target is.

So I am afraid that I don't have any good advice for you. You probably have it working as good as it gets.

Maybe you could try using an archery target. Perhaps the arrow collection animation works better with it rather than a heavy melee practice target.

What like the hay target? Right now he's using the wooden target that the Grey Prince uses. It's like a flattened, wooden version. I choose it for space considerations.

I'm thinking you're right and that I should not be a perfectionist, lol

It is strange, but different targets behave differently in the game. Like mages can cast ranged magic at the heavy target you are using, but they cannot cast ranged magic at the practice dummy that looks like a metal man because all their magic always misses it.

Another oddity is that the ranged magic practice animation does not work outdoors. Mages can only practice magic indoors. My mother always told me that if I was going to play rough, then I should go outside to do it.

Now that you mention it, I have a mod with people practicing archery on a heavy target like you are using, and I don't recall ever seeing them even try to pick up their arrows.
