ell46
This isn't really a technical problem, I'm just curious and a bit annoyed. I recently install a freebie program called Peerblock and last night I left it running in the background by accident only to find when I looked at the blocked log that all the time I was playing DAO my PC was trying to contact Electronic Arts. I have the settings for giving feedback or anything to do with going on line disabled so I was not too happy to find that the game is trying to go on line without my knowledge. Did anyone else realised this happened or have I missed a setting somewhere?
Thandal
Ell; Did you allow your game to connect ONCE at startup when you began to play? If you disconnect from the internet completely (no network connection found) then it won't keep trying. Otrherwise, it will attempt to verify that the installation you're currently playing is "one of the five distinct instances in a 24-hour period" you are allowed to have active under the license agreement. See the very last item in the quote below. Excerpt from this post by BioWare on the BSN: "Dragon Age 2 Final DRM and FAQ" Chris Priestly wrote...UPDATED:Below are the details of the final version of DRM that will be used with Dragon Age 2 for PC and Mac. We appreciate your patience and feedback on this. DRM is always a topic of much debate, even internally. It requires a delicate balance between providing some level of IP protection while minimizing the inconvenience or intrusion to a player’s experience. These decisions are not made lightly - and a lot of time and effort was dedicated to ensuring that the system for DA2 is skewed to the player side of the experience. It is as follows: Dragon Age 2 Physical & Digital PC/Mac DRM are as follows:No disc check, you do not need the disc in drive to play.No limit on the total number of PCs you can install the game on.There is a limit to the number of unique/different PCs that can play the game within a time window (if online) [5 PCs in 24hrs].After each new install there is a 1-time online check needed the next time you play, requiring a log in to your EA account to verify game ownership. If you are a member of these forums, you already have an EA account – just use the same email/password.You can play offline thereafter - the game will NOT require any subsequent login checks. If online, a game ownership check happens each time you play...

Having no internet connection, I will never be able to experience DA2, but have had no issues with running DA:O, have no idea if it's ever tried making a (non)connection. -Raymond(NZ)

And the whole "Does it phone home, and if so, when?" issue is a hot one for DA2 right now. [/looks at toes, shuffles feet] But I'm baffled. If you "have no internet connection", how are you posting to this thread? And if you do, even if it's very expensive and so you want to limit connection time, the one-time DA2 install verification takes only seconds... Guessed you'd become shell shocked from the DA2 discussions : ) My own case is simple -- I'm looking at the forums from work. Only 'work-authenticated' machines are allowed on the network here. Has anyone else noticed Ell's behaviour((-- or has Ell become shell shocked, and meant DA2 as Thandal assumed))
ell46
Hi Thandal, it's been a while. It was Origins I was talking about, that is sneakily trying to go on line while I'm playing. I cancelled my preorder for DA2 after playing the demo and so far no regrets what so ever, I won't be joining in any discussions about it. I'm going to wait patiently for Skyrim and keep learning to use the construction set for it. Really good medieval RPG's have often had years between good games so I'm used to waiting. My other half is playing DA2 on the PS3, but he's new to gaming so will play anything that calls itself an RPG, no taste at all
