What I would like to see is the Dragonborn giving Breezehome to Lydia for all her service. Just a few sentences spoken to her and Lydia saying thank you Thane or something like that. The house is no longer yours and your key is given to Lydia. She sleeps in the main bed and it will be locked at night like a regular house.
