chaospearl
Bwahahaha... I have FINALLY managed to rid myself of one of the most annoying things about Oblivion (in my opinion). I'm just so gosh-darned pleased with myself and the world right now that I figured I'd come tell everyone about it. If you're not interested, just move on to the next thread, nothing to see here. The annoyance in question was a repeating atmospheric sound in the background that had been driving me absolutely crazy. At first I thought it had to be some kind of error sound or the script effect sound I've seen posted about, but that one is always described as a "cannon-like" THUD that repeats at specific intervals, and the sound bugging me so much wasn't anything like that. I also only heard it in some places and not others, which made me think it had to be a regional atmospheric sound. After making sure that it wasn't being added by Atmospheric Oblivion mod or More Immersive Sound, I figured it was just something I'd have to deal with, and I turned the background music up louder whenever I heard it. After listening to the horrible repeating mechanical sound for over an hour while skirting the Imperial City, I finally couldn't take it anymore. I opened up the Oblivion Sounds archive with BSA Commander and unpacked the whole thing, then started playing all the regional atmospheric sounds one by one until I heard the aggravatingly familiar noise. Sure enough, it turns out the sound is supposed to be some kind of wind gust on the plains (wtf?). You can hear it in "ambr_plains_windgust_07" and "ambr_plains_windgust_11". Seriously, does anybody here think that the noise sounds ANYTHING even remotely close to a wind gust? It's a mechanical whoosh-thud sort of sound with a hollow echo that I would never have associated with environmental atmosphere if I didn't know that's what Bethsoft called it. Anyway, now that I knew which exact files contained my nemesis, I had a plan. I created a couple of 1-second silent wav files and named them with the filenames of the annoying sounds in question, then placed them into the Oblivion sounds folder, figuring out the correct folder path by looking at the archive again in BSA Commander. Then I started my game again and pricked my ears. HA! HA HA HA HA and HA! No more horrible whoosh-thud "wind gusts"! I win! I still want to know why on earth anybody would ever think that particular noise sounds anything like a wind gust. Is it possible I'm the only person who found it that annoying? IndorilTheGreat
Odd... I've never heard that noise before... Do you play with the music turned off? Now I am curious... off to investigate...
Axxaw
Yeah, I have never heard that sound ever... ever. In fact I remember a sound mod that came with a "no wind" plugin, if I was a betting man I'd put my money on that mod being the culprit, but I always used the no wind plugin anyways so I couldn't say for sure (now I don't use it at all but I think it might be one of the two you mentioned). chaospearl
Odd... I've never heard that noise before... Do you play with the music turned off? Not usually. I use BMS for customized music, but I have a few silent mp3 files of various lengths mixed into my playlists, so from time to time I'll get several minutes of silence in the wilderness. Sometimes it's nice to listen to the birds singing or the crickets chirping. You miss out on a lot of the atmospheric sounds if you always play with the music turned up too high. The annoying hollow whoosh-thud was jarring enough that I could easily hear it right through the background music, though. To me it's mechanical sounding and definitely does not belong, it stands out loudly and obviously, and it breaks my immersion. I just don't understand how anyone could think it sounds like a wind gust. As I said, for a long time I thought it was some kind of script effect or a sound added by a mod; it didn't occur to me that it was actually supposed to be there in the vanilla game. I wish I could post it here so you could hear it without having to unpack the BSA file, but it's a wee bit over the 250kb size limit. You can find it in the "Oblivion - Sounds" bsa, as either "ambr_plains_windgust_07" or "ambr_plains_windgust_11"

That's what I thought too at first. That it was from one of my sound mods, either Atmospheric Oblivion or More Immersive Sound. MIS is the one that comes with the "no wind" plugin. But no. The sound in question is from vanilla Oblivion. It's in the BSA file that comes with the game, and you can hear it whenever you're in a windy plains area, such as the beaches and roads surrounding the Imperial City island. I was hearing it constantly just walking along the road from Weye to Pell's Gate. I don't know whether the game always plays the wind gust sounds (there are 12 different files, I assume it randomly loops through them all) when you're in those areas, or only when you're in the area AND the weather specifies that it's windy. I do know that I hear the sound frequently enough to hatehatehate it. I don't use fast travel, ever, period, in fact it's disabled in my game. So I spend a lot of time walking the roads surrounding the IC. Maybe that's why I hear it so much more frequently than most players.
kchez
I wonder if it's the same one I'm experiencing. Everytime I go anywhere, indoors or out in the wilderness; when it loads I get two loud bangs like cannon fire, about 3 seconds apart. No idea why.
