How to Prevent Random Skyrim CTD's?

DeathBringerOfMordor

Recommended Posts

When I'm playing Skyrim, I keep CTD'ing at random. I've only just installed it his week, and have only played it for about a dozen hours, or so.

Facts to Know:

-I'm running Windows 8, completely updated, even every optional drivers update; JUST checked, and updated.

-I have no mods, and have yet to update Skyrim nor check for updates for it.

-I have no clue what to post/I've been trying to finish a mission in Skyrim, and failing due to CTD, so I'm exhausted from rage, so I'll post more later.

-ELI5 any commands, programming, or anything of the sort.

Skyrim is a grossly flawed console game port, and unfortunately had to be fixed by the community in a series of "unofficial" patches, plus numerous other memory patches to just get it to work on a pc. You didn't say what version of the game you have, but you will need to update it to the latest version or you'll get nowhere. Then you should start here to get it setup: http://wiki.step-project.com/STEP:2.2.9.1

Stay away from the mods section of the wiki until you get the game working correctly first - as in no more crashes. In addition to the "unofficial" patches, you should install SKSE, enable the Sheson memory patch, and ENBoost to get this thing actually functioning.

I have what seems to be a common glitch with my Skyrim (from what I've seen online), where I can't access my data files, at least normally, because when I start it up, the words are un-clickable. Do you know how to fix that/how to get into it a different way?

Where are your data files?
