flatline115
Welcome to this great survey of epic proportions. The question is in the title. I'd like if you'd keep it as serious as possible if you may as I want to use the information at some point.
CaptainPatch
My overall thought is that the dragons are too unified in their support of Alduin. Lore indicates that dragons had been quite territorial, fighting each other where their personal air space intersected. But supposedly by resurrecting them, Alduin made them ALL beholden to him. However, as the MQ progresses and the Dragonborn has been killing off dragons by the score with Alduin doing NOTHING to stop him/her, they should be thinking that resurrection or no, maybe Alduin is NOT the leader they should be following. Which would inevitably lead to some dragon versus dragon battles as they demonstrate their differences of opinion.
flatline115
Intertwining that with the player would be... a stretch though. Given how little we see alduin it very well could be that there were challangers to his thu'um and they failed miserably..?
cdcooley
Besides the things I already changed in my Not So Fast - Main Quest mod (adding a sense of dramatic pacing, not forcing the introduction of the Blades until after you've really started working with the Greybeards and hopefully realized there really is a growing dragon threat, and disconnecting the silly Season Unending civil war negotiations) I would love a re-write of the Thalmor Embassy party that would allow you to complete the objectives via stealth or magic rather than combat. The Embassy mission is crazy for a Thane of Whiterun (and maybe of other Holds, or the Harbinger, Archmage, etc.) to attempt. I should be able to sneak away, get the documents, then sneak back into the party. The normally paranoid Delphine actually puts your real name on the invitation without any plan for how you would get back out unnoticed!

Harpokratest
The finale to the mq was pretty disappointing. There's very little consequence or reward for like 30 hours of slogging through the mq, just a sort of meh Shout and Gormlain shouting really loudly to 'hail the dragonborn'. Maybe the mq could have felt more rewarding if they didn't give you so much power (fast-traveling and the like) at the beginning of the game, and then gave you teleportation or, I don't know, the ability to turn into a dragon and fly everywhere after the mq. Another gripe I have, is that it doesn't seem like there are enough consequences. Like, the Thalmor don't retaliate after Diplomatic immunity and I think the civil war could have been tied into the mq a lot better than one peace talk. fraquar
My problem with the MQ stems from being thrust into it from minute 1 without ever having a chance to develop my character. Lets be honest here, if there is a dragon threat, it makes everything else pale in comparison, especially if we know the lore of who that dragon is. Introduce that once the player reaches a reasonable level, say 20. By then, they've at least had a chance to experience what is really going on in Skyrim - utter chaos. Every time I start a new play through, I intentionally figure out how to bypass the MQ without having to load a mod to do that. I've come to the point where I accept that the start is a future cut scene, and once I've left the cave it's my job to build the back story until such time as I'm ready to start and finish the MQ. Level 1, hey dude, you need to go chase down the eater of worlds.........
KanesGhost
I would love to see a separation between the MQ and other Quests, such as cdCooley has done with 'Season Unending', I would also love to see the same done with the Mages College and the TG, not have them forced upon us...I have learned how to circumvent the MC and TG, but a number of Players would not...and it is a shame gotta Meta Game to avoid the College especially. If the Mages Librarian could be spoken with without having to join the College would be a great step up and make a lot more sense for non Mage Dovahkins. TheSpaceShuttleChallenger
I'd agree that the main quest ends way too early in the game. Either you have to put it off for a while and let dragons run amok like a scardeykhiin, or you have to rush through it, be done by level 15 and spend the rest of your game wishing you had something more epic to do. Even if it just means that the quest has written in a few roadblocks where it becomes necessary to "bide your time" and do other things until you're ready to progress. I also kind of wish I could bypass Delphine and the Blades. Delphine's 'tude just says I should let her try fighting a dragon by herself, and I resent being shoehorned in with the Blades, particularly if I happen to be playing an anti-imperial character, or if I'm the guy who assassinated the emperor. Kind of awkward. Besides that, I find it really hard to believe that there's just no-one else in all of Skyrim who has an idea of how to take down Alduin.
