xTrogdorx
So I thought I'd try my hand at modeling, and I've been following this 'Miax's Geck Training Manual'. It described that I'd need a number of things to get started: Blender, Python, Blender's NIF plugins, and something called PyFFI. I downloaded and installed PyFFI, and now whenever I right click on any folder, it lists the option 'Optimize with PyFFI'. What the s***, I don't want this thing optimizing my recycle bin and stuff. Is there a way to turn this off? I'm worried I might click it on accident. Do I even need this crap? Edited March 26, 2011 by xTrogdorx
Fumofumo
That... If I remember correctly, it comes in as a part of the installation for one of those things you listed if you don't choose a custom selection thereby selecting to disable that feature from being added to the right click menu. What it does: Basically it optimizes a Nif file which is the basic model format that Fallout and Oblivion use. It isn't necessary for most users. Mainly it is more helpful to 3DSMax users than Blender users. It is also less useful to Fallout modelers as it tends to screw up things.. When ever I install a program, if it allows for customization during the installation, well then I customize it otherwise you end up with things you don't want like this. You shouldn't need to worry about it as it opens up a command prompt that still requires a yes or no confirmation.
xTrogdorx
Okay I uninstalled that separate PyFFI thing. Now in my installed programs list I have Python 2.6.6 and Python 2.6 PyFFI-2.1.9. I open up blender and it recognizes Python 2.6. But it doesn't seem to be able to recognize .nif files. There's no option to import .nif in the file->import menu. So I went back and reinstalled that separate PyFFI download and tried it again, and it still wouldn't let me import .nifs. So I uninstalled it again. This is all very confusing, I wish someone would write a setup guide for this that didn't involve linking to other guides that don't give complete information. After spending a good 4 hours now just screwing around with installations and looking for help, I'm about to give up. It just isn't worth the frustration to create the one or two things that I had in mind. Edit: Nevermind, I think I finally figured it out. Turns out on the Sourceforge page, the "Looking for the latest version?" link is just to the latest version of Nifskope, it doesn't include the nif tools for blender like I had assumed. The nif tools are all of the other links below that. Once I installed that, now Blender is allowing me to import nifs. Blender on FO3 includes everything you actually need to run it with nicely written instructions by LHammonds.
xTrogdorx
Yeah I was following a guide that told me where to get the individual pieces. And it turns out I did need that separate PyFFI download. Additionally I found a post on the niftools forums that allowed me to go into the registry and remove that right click folder thing. All is well now, at least as far as getting started is concerned.

I know you figured it out which is great, but just a word of encouragement: for any kind of development with free software, especially when you are just getting started I would say overwhelming and confusing is the order of the day. It is hard to know where to start, or even what to ask. And finding a working walkthrough type of guide that gets you going is very rare, though from time to time you will find one. On the main nexus site (not the forums) there is a place where you can post articles, maybe you could be the very first person to post the article on how you got all this working? :) p.s. The first project is always the hardest, then the rest are easy-peasy, as Yes Man would say. Edited March 28, 2011 by drakeelvin
romancemonk
It might be little late, but anyway I'll show you how to remove ur right-click context thing, as it was main problem u had been through... however, it's simple to remove that menu run 'regedit' with 'run' from your windows start menu and go to 'HKEY_CLASS_ROOT\Folder\Shell' by simple clickings and finally you can find your annoying 'optimize with PyFFI' as a registry folder you can simply delete it, but if you're not sure you can back up it with 'export' which could be performed by mouse right-click Edited July 28, 2011 by romancemonk
