Festus Companion

slapping some robo legs on festus could be fun, but I would expect that it'd require some new animations

I don't think that would be the way to go, unless you won the request lottery. Way too many animations for a new creature, and far too few good animators willing to take up a project like that. What's typically done is rigging the mesh to a new skeleton. A human skeleton is probably the best choice if you don't mind the animations (being the human/NPC).

If you need them (animations) to be robotic, the only one that is probably close enough to even attempt rigging would be teh protectron. I'v done that with human clothes/armor and it turned out borderline OK. There's some big differences in the top half (like Bip01 Head is way up above the shoulders) causing some distortion. You can minimize it a bit by moving some vertices to different groups, but there's not nearly enough flexibility (Neck1 is just too far away from bip01 Head) to remove it completely. The hands would probably also be a real chore.

Well, what I'd originally envisioned was the Festus box itself simply having some form mobility, or possibly the AI of Festus being implemented into a custom skinned robot, such as a protectron or Robo-brain. I know this wouldn't be too craze an undertaking, and I'm actually not expected much fulfillment out of this request anyhow. Just a fun thought. :)

You won't have any luck with mobility if you don't have any movement in the skeleton, and I'd wager there are no animations like that for Festus. You could move him along via script but it would be very basic (keep him at a specific distance from the player).

Transfering the AI to another robot would be fairly do-able since it's essentially just making a new companion with a dialog quest containing his oggs.

Are you aware of any fairly competent mod authors that might be willing to cooperate with me on making such, or would I be better off tackling the endeavor on my own? I actually don't mind learning to do it myself, but I would very much prefer to find someone with a little more experience under their belt to give me a hand.

I don't know of anyone I could personally volunteer, that's pretty much the function of the request forum. Maybe someone will offer to help. I'd say it might induce someone to help if you were to write up some interesting or intriguing dialog, back story or some such. Something that might "hook" peoples interest. There's no guarantee, but that would probably aid in attracting interest and therefore help.

If your patient I'm writing up a tutorial for creating completely custom creatures that will tell you what you need to do. Yes I could make him a complete new creature including animations, but I'm up to my neck in my own projects so the best I can offer is a tutorial in the coming weeks.

On the plus side for your project you won't have to make the mesh, UV map and texture him which is the major time consuming part.

The tutorial will be based around 3DS MAX and not Blender.
