[Question] About retex an armor - plans for new mods

Hi modding community, how are you ?

After learning from various place (mostly how to retex ) I have had a plan for new mods project.

Here is the problem :

On one of retex tutorial (I think it was adinos and krayzie's tutorial), I need to extract .erf file,

after that I need to retex the .dds using photoshop or any other program.

Now the question , is that legal? can I really do that? can I extract .erf file, retex .dds and after that

use it on my custom .uti armor? can I mods it and share it with the comunity?

I mean its one thing to use vanilla armor provided in the toolset, but to actually edit them?

The reason I ask because I was in the middle of making a replica of Awakening sentinel armor

by using a retex of Chevalier armor .

Thank You for reading

Regards

Edriano.

ps. A few screenshot(s) of the project :

Chevalier armor black retex Work in progress (right panel)

still very-very rough in comparison with sentinel from awakening (left panel) http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/pinch.gif

After spent 5 hours in photoshop, can you tell the difference?

well if you must know mhairi is the one wearing sentinel http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/laugh.gif

In Origins, after a few cut here in there, I think it is done,

but still need to work on how to add set item bonus.

You should be alright as long as you don't use the assets for another game or try to sell it.

Thank you for your reply rainshock, does anyone else would like to add anything?

ps.

what does it mean with "as long as you don't use the assets for another game"?

You mean I can extract .erf from oblivion / morrowind or even DA2 and use it in origins

(which I don't btw) by using the toolset ? if it is then ' wow!' I didn't know the toolset were that powerful. http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/blink.gif

Ok, what they mean by that. When you extract contents from a game, it's called Ripping. When you take the stufff that you extracted, and use it for a game that it wasnt distributed for, or convert it to work with a game that it wasn't created and shipped with, that's called Porting.

And unless the creator/author of those games have given permission for people to do that with their content/assets, then it is considered to be theft. Or also called an Illegal Port.

Most of the game companies don't give the permission. And most of them get very upset when they find that folks have done a port with their material/assets. There's a few that have, such as the Witcher Game and the STALKER game. But otherwise most of it you just can't port over from one game to another.

In the case of Dragon Age, Specifically DAO and DAA.... DAA is an "expansion". It will not work without the main game installed, and thus does not qualify as a different game. So porting material back and forth with DAO and DAA is considered to be legal, and BioWare doesn't care about it.

You'd mentioned in another thread about the DA toolset being able to open Oblivion files. Thats very interesting. And kinda cool! And while you would be able to use say... DA stuff in Oblivion, or Oblivion stuff in DA.... if the content was created by BioWare or Bethseda, then you would not be able to release that modded content to the public, or share it with others. It would be strictly for your own personal use. ;)

Thank you for taking the time to reply DarkeWolf ,needed to be sure .

All this legal stuff 'don't do this don't do that' is very confusing most of the time.

So for the sake of argument let me get this right :

It is ok for me to retex chevalier armor to make it look like sentinel from awakening,

mods it and share it (dds, mmh, mao etx) with the nexus comunity here.

Is that correct ?

Heyas Edriano, No problem! Glad to help out when I can :)

LOL yeah, I know what you mean. Try being on our side of it and having to keep track of several different games

Yup you should be able to share it. But because of how close a resemblance you got it, I would definitely suggest that you keep hold of the files that you made to make it. You might at some time be asked to show proof that you created the texture files yourself. Aside from that there shouldnt be any problems :D

Well I am thinking that

' what would be the better way to prove that I made it then to make a guide on how to make it?'

It will take sometimes , but I think that would be the best defense http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/blush.gif .

Edriano .
