KennethKarl
That's Bethesda games for you. I don't know if your game is messed up or not, but I have a mod suggestion for you. Go to the New Vegas Nexus sites search bar and type the following: A MAD world M.A.D. Mutually Assured Destruction!!! It is an underated realism mod that multiplys all weapon damage by 4!!It also sets the damage on a flat scale. Meaning that If your guns skill is 5 or 50 your gun will still do x amount of damage. It also has some other cool stuff. The one thing I hate about it though is that it changes the games timescale. This causes every real hour to equal six in-game hours.I don't like it because in my opinion it mucks with the overall scale of the game, and makes hardcore mod a *censored*. If you sleep for 24 hours you DIE!!He has yet to patch that. But Other than that it is a great realism mod. Remember this: You can kill them in one shot, but they can do the same. It offers a chance for FNV to actually be challenging. I recomend it for you friend. If that doesn't fix your problem I don't know what will. I am no expert.Good luck! :D

In general I've found that using guns with higer DAM and a decent rate of fire (as opposed to higher DPS) are more effective as the game progresses because the higher DAM overcomes enemy armor and bites off more health with each bullet. A decent rate of fire helps you systematically chop down really tough guys. In this regard, the whole seems biased in favor of lever action cowboy rifles: Cowboy Repeater, Trail Carbine, Brush Gun. Revolvers also do pretty good DAM though they are a pain to reload, and whenever I play they are bugged and miss 95% of the time so I totally ignore them, which is very sad because I'd love to use a .44 magnum. When the 10mm starts to become inneffective I switch to a Cowboy Repeater for a big jump in bite per shot. When that gets old I go to Trail Carbine, then finally to Brush Gun. For tactical shots the Sniper or Anti-Materiel rifles are fantastic but both are very slow. I switch to a cowboy gun if the enemy charges. For mundane enemies especially Jackal/Viper type bandits and a lot of varmints you run across, the older guns with the cheaper and more pentiful ammo are always ok and they save ammo and wear and tear for your good guns to be used when they are needed. Late in the game I always end up with a 12.7mm pistol for up close shooting: you can kill deathclaws with that gun but you don't get it until much later along with the Brush Gun and Anti-Materiel rifle. Because of my personal bias against the high rate of fire vanilla assault rifles that do crumby damage I made my own line of 7.62mm assault rifles that shoot 308 rounds and pack a whallop against anything. It's a very tiny simple mod if you want to try it out. Be warned tho 308 ammo is not cheap nor easy to come by all the time. enlo
also: shooting in the head and actually hitting it is something different. Some guns have a horrible spread and you won't hit the target most of the time.Guns like the Maria, That Gun or Ranger Sequoia are quite good at the beginning but sooner or later rifles / bigger guns are the way to go What primary stats and weapons skills do you have?also take a look at http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout:_New_Vegas_weapons#Pistols
