Is OBSE optional?

Hi,

I've seen "Requirements: Latest OBSE version" in mod readmes more than once. I was just wondering what would be the problem if I don't use OBSE and if the mod won't work properly which files from OBSE do I need if not all of them and do I need to run the game from the launcher OBSE provides or activate the .esp file from the "Data Files" sub-menu?

Thank you in advance.

It depends on what mod it is that requires OBSE. But without OBSE, they will not work. Unless the OBSE part is a small part of the mod, but then that part won't work. I've only seen one mod so far that says OBSE is optional, but you will miss a few features then. It was some kind of monster mod and the werecrocodile required OBSE...

OK but should I start Oblivion form obse_loader.exe or just check off the .esp file in "Data files"??

OBSE doesn't have a .esp file, only the mod that requires it does. You have to activate the mod that requires OBSE of course, but to run OBSE itself you have to load oblivion with the obse_loader.exe file.
