maralbert
Morrowind with improved graphics (Oblivion) and gameplay more spells, more items etc. I always thought morrowind as being a bit tacky for some reason...
thanateros
The quests for Morrowind are generally more generic (go here, fetch this, come back, get reward) by RP standards but does offer a great deal of immersion. The game is politically oriented, and you won't necessarily get into the politics of the game unless you join a guild, great house, and start the main quest. Unlike in Oblivion, you have to meet certain requirements in order for a guild to accept you as a member. Furthermore, you have to advance your skills in order to be promoted. At first Morrowind is a bit daunting. The world feels larger and you start out the game as an absolutely insignificant whelp almost incapable of standing on their own feet. It takes a while to learn the controls and figure out how not to die very often. The landscape is wonderfully diverse, the cities are magnificently constructed and are HUGE. As for character development; you'll have a hard time being a mage, the interface between spellcasting and using weapons requires you to change from spellcasting stance to weapon fighting stance. Both games have their strengths depending on what you're in the mood for; Morrowind will give you a more satisfying roleplaying experience, while Oblivion is more action/adventure. Landsknecht
Morrowind had a better atmosphere, storyline, and factions. I also find the quality of mods for Morrowind to be better, but that is an unfair comparison since Morrowind has been out longer. Oblivion has better graphics, combat system, and has physics engine. Those things are superficial things compared to depth Morrowind has. Conclusion: Morrowind is overall better, but what would be best would be an Morrowind given the upgrades Oblivion has. Crisb92
I found that the Morrowind landscapes were slightly blurry after a while, so I would recommend a texture pack such as Isathar's Morrowind landscapes, almost certainly available on TESSource. Morrowind felt so much more, I don't know, manageable, even though it was vastly alien and had many huge cities. Oblivion just feels a bit too stereotypical of a fantasy eadventure in the early to late middle ages. Morrowind was like a sci-fi adventure, with better skills, even if the missing when you hit a target in the middle of the body, and saw your sword/ arrow/ axe/ weapon pass straight through them did detract from the reality a bit. Even so, Oblivion's better graphics and physics system make it feel real, even if it is likely that you can see through them to the amount of content that has been removed from Morrowind. The Morrowind combat system, for all that, does seem a bit more manageable to me, and the lockpicking and persuasion have lost it as well, in my opinion. Also, the levelling is a bit severe in Oblivion, and dungeons seem a bit pointless and samey, with no real point to exploring as you just find the same worthless items all the time, rather than something interesting such as The Ashes of Lord Brinne, and a ring to go with them which really brings the players imagination into it, if there isn't something written about it, making them wonder who the person was or the circumastances that led the adventurer to be scrawling on a scroll with his own blood. Anyway, beginning to rant, and I'm sure you've seen these opinions before. Cris
10111010
In my opinion Morrowind was a lot more immersive and made the player feel like a nobody when starting out. But as you completed tasks and trained and worked at it you became stronger and were able to do other things. It was unforgiving at some points and i much liked that. Oblivion on the other hand makes you feel like some amazing swordsman at the start. You can kill things easily and you just run right through it without any planning at all. Also since everything scales to you in Oblivion it was a very easy game through out. As for landscapes i like Morrowind much more even though it didnt have LOD i dont care there are mods for that anyways. The landscapes in Morrowind were a lot more diverse and different for example the Bitter Coast is a swampy place while Red mountion had a red dusty sky and cracked black ground and the occasional lava pond. Oblivion had LOD big deal i can see a blurry textured mountain in the distance i dont much care for it. Oblivions landscapes were same every single moment of the game one type, forest. No cracked ash floors, desert like regions, ect. Though oblivion has a small snowy region its not much. The caves in Oblivion all looked the same to. Now before you think im a retard because generally caves look alike they used the same kind building format on it. For example you have a elevated platform with two or three stalagmites around it and a chest on top in every damned cave. While Morrowind had differently constructed caves. Combat in Morrrowind was great fun i enjoyed it but it was a bit annoying that you click on the enemy you swing your sword right into them and it says you missed. But overall it was much fun and once you get your skill higher you dont need to worry about it. Oblivion gives you a hit every single time you swing. Combat seemed to be better than a original Morrowind verson. With the magic of mods though morrowind can have combo attacks, dismemberment, special attacks, disarming enemies, and the other fun stuff. I do understand that Oblivions combat seems better but to me i dont like slashing a goblin 45 times till he dies. I also liked Morrowinds diolauge system better you just read in a box on the screen. It required no voice actors and allowed mods to still have a proffesional look. Now Oblivion has voice acting during diolauge and with mods unless you have people willing to talk into a microphone have there voices screwed around with for a couple of hours you have to read the stuff and it looks funky. Outcome: Morrowind is better, It has a lot more immersion, better landscape, diolauge, and has spears! (wonder why the devs removed my beloved spear?) Oblivion: dont bother listing what little it has besides physics
