Translating Mods

It can be done, but it is not a quick and easy process. You also need someone who can translate the language and wants to translate the language in the mod.

...And you should have two teams, in fact - one devoted to translating the text and the other tasked with implementing the translation (in other words, good command of the toolset). Both teams require constant cooperation, because there are limits of available spacing you have to squeeze the translation into. You need to take this into consideration.

Plus, you have to get permission from the original author(s) to use work in the first place.

To cut the long story short, in regard to DAO mods, a lot of work with little estimated gain (gain being: fans play the translation). When we translate FMs for Thief, thousands of people download the localised version within the first few months, but the fandom is different - and Cenega did a splendid job of localising the original games, so you "only" have to match their quality. Why is it so important? Easy: you want the mod to be a fluent extension of the original game. Language must be consistent. If you have different words for the same NPC, let's say, differing between what the official localisation team and the fan translators have provided, it becomes a mess. And who is to blame instantly? The last translators, that's who. Word goes out and less people even bother trying the mod - bad for both the people who translated it and the mod's author. It is also linked with the quality of the base game's translation: the Polish version of DAO is atrocious. The first thing you have to do is to manually switch to the English version in order to play at all. How many players would actually play this translated mod then? The base game in English, the mod in Polish? Not likely - it creates a dissonance.

Hello GothicWarrior,

I am doing some german translations (with permission of the authors). Maybe I could give you some useful hints.

I don't speak polish at all, but the method would be the same.

It's a little bit of work, but it isn't nuclear physics.

Of course, you would need the permission of the original mods authors. Some authors gave a kind of general permission on condition of getting the credits.

Regards
