Conversing with NPCs via keyboard

What i'd like to do be able to do is talk to an NPC and then, rather than having to mouse over an option and clicking, be able to just hit a number and have a corresponding conversation option be selected.

 

So, when I initiate a conversation, it'd look something like this:

[ 1 ] Who are you?

[ 2 ] Show me what you have to sale.

[ 3 ] Tell me about X.

[ 4 ] Goodbye.

All I would have to do is hit the corresponding number on the keyboard to select the conversation option. Does a mod or option like this exist?

 

If this doesn't already exist, how complicated of a mod would it be to create?

 

Would this be a good concept to introduce myself to modding or should I start with something a little simpler?

 

I took about 4 years worth of various language college level coding courses but never had to apply any of that in the past 7 or 8 years since. How similar is modding to writing basic java or c++?
