Are Followers a big part of your Skyrim experience?

@Tony - this is why i enjoyed the followers in DA, they have unique personalities and the choices you make actually have dramatic effects on outcomes and relations. You actually begin to feel a rapport between them all and eventually youve got a group and style that you stick to.

If it were possible to play that game in 1st person, it would have eaten a lot more of my time.

I don't actually play Dragon Age games, but I am a huge fan of the way Bioware does their characters in Mass Effect.

I havent spent much gime on them either, but on the first game i put 20 ot 30 hours into. I own them all, just dont really enjoy the playstyle as much as my Bethesda rpgs.

I havent played any mass effect at all tbh, ill give your post a read tomorrow and maybe ill check out some of the gameplay videos on it. I think i have a copy of ME3 with the key still intact somewhere here too.

I personally think that the only game ever made that is even close to as good as Mass Effect 3 is Mass Effect 2... All other games seem to be missing something after playing those 2.

My brother is a big Dragon Age fan, and I have seen him play through those games many, many times... to the point where he burnt out my Xbox... Haven't owned a console since. Never felt like playing them myself, the game engine looked very bland compared to Unreal (I love the Unreal Engine) and the gameplay looked kind of boring.

However, I don't think anyone would debate that Bioware is on the cutting edge of interactive dialogue, and Bethesda is basically just trying to keep up with where Bioware was years ago.

But on the other side, I have played games that were out of date and had bad graphics even for the Playstation 2 days, and they had no pre-written dialogue at all, not even one voice actor. However, through the dynamic of the gameplay they created characters that I remember more than any character I ever encountered in a Bethesda game.

Look up Romance of the Three Kingdoms X for PS2 if you are interested in that kind of thing. I caught myself about 2 weeks ago retelling a story that happened in that game 10 years ago... The fact that I remember that really tells you something about letting the gameplay speak for itself as a character develops.

Though I also think part of it is the scale, and shifting the focus away from the 'go save the world' mentality to the 'community' mentality. But that is a whole different discussion for a totally different day.

I started up a new play-through. Installed several follower mods that looked interesting. Using SOT and setting my game to Legendary difficulty, I hit Bleak Falls Barrow with Vilja, Tocatta, Uethgerd and Selene Kate. Sure we were clearing everything and neither side was terribly op. It was interesting, but playing a heavy warrior style isn't really my thing. I definitely want to try something different though. I've always played on the Dawnguard side since I have always been an archer, I've always completed Ancient Technology very early. I've done several games where I have been an "Arcane Assassin" using combinations of Sneak, Marksman and Conjuration. That's a lot of fun, but you needs some mods to alter the way Bound Weapons work to make it worth the while.

Anyway, I'm going to use my own mod.....a little mod I made that allows you to summon progressively more conjured souls as you level through the conjuration tree but doesn't give unlimited souls. Actually, the mod that piqued my interest in this mage type was the new Coldharbor Resummoned mod. Technically, not followers, but permanent summons. But this time I am going to accept Harkon's "gift"

So, with that in mind, can anyone recommend any followers they like that fit within that theme? (Vampire-Conjuration Mage)

No, they get in the way, screw up balancing, and become generally annoying pretty fast. Stealth is basically unplayable with followers (yes there is the aft feature but that essentially mimicks you not having a follower until stealth is broken so...). Magic/projectile based combat is a nightmare with them getting in the line of fire. I don't need a packrat. I use all kinds of pouches mods for that. And even if I wasn't using those, I'd much rather console my carryweight than having to deal with followers.

Every once in a while I try using a follower to try and comprehend why everyone is so excited about them only to regret my choice minutes later.

Try Inigo 2.2 update. In this version the author included wistle command that helps with tactical combat.

I would like to see more follower mods incorporating "move out of the way when players bow is drawn / spell is charged" condition for ai like in BFF Animal Companions.

So basically, I've been playing around with some ideas in my head about having companion like characters that don't exactly follow you into battle and how I could make that work. I think the Workshop Settlements in Fallout 4 are going to open up a lot of opportunity to create something like that, but we will have to wait 19 more days to see.

So, if you have any ideas on this sort of thing, I would be happy to listen.

There is actually very simple follower mod that fits what you are looking for. The only thing it misses is dialogue lines and maybe an unique framework like the one Inigo is using for more self awareness.

What I love about this follower is that he is the ultimate coward. He will just run and hide, you just can't count on this weak merchant handling even a mudcrab. Besides that he will buy of you any stolen items and anything that you let him carry for you he will try to sell you back, if you don't pay attention.

OK, I am completely revising my game. I'm removing a bunch of different mods, grabbing some different ones that will make my game even more difficult. This is with the intent to run with multiple followers at a time. I'm going to try Vilja and Inigo together and see if this changes things for me. I've always felt running with more than one follower was overpowered.....especially when I have been playing they type of character who snipes. 1-2 shot kills from (very long) range.....I'd been using the Scoped Bow mod. I think I will try mods like SOT and Genesis along with others like Deadly Dragons....etc. And go the warrior path. bring a healer and all that....

What helped me with immersion in the past were suplementary mods in my load order (I run them with older version of Inigo and haven't tried them with the latest).

RND or iNeed + one of the camping mods

Dine with Followers

Fast Sit 'n Relax with Follower Support

Death Alternative

Enhanced Skyrim Factions - The Companions Guild

+Enhanced Skyrim Followers - Aela the Huntress

The additional lines were not voiced, however completing whole companion arc was more meaningfull.

Duel + Combat Evolved - Makes the enemies less stupid and more responsive.
