Nexusaurus
I know Bethesda put a lot of work into the vanilla followers, but I just can't get invested in them. When you get right down to it, there's no risk. No matter what, they just won't die. I don't feel tense when I take one out on a mission. But if I were to take one of my own settlers, a normal, vulnerable, killable person who my character is responsible for keeping alive, on a mission with me, then I suddenly any encounter I get into has a lot more tension. Even more so when you consider that each settler plays a vital role in the village, and thusly becomes even more valuable. I feel that having companions that you are responsible for and invested in could greatly add to immersion.
gavin36
I believe there is a mod that does this now, however until we can actually name settlers ourselves and they level up its a bit meaningless.
