How do i go about re skinning enemies in games? new to modding :)

Hey,

 

As the title suggests I would like to know how to go about re skinning enemy models in games to something else as a sufferer of arachnophobia I can't play any games with spiders/ scorpions or pretty much any insect in for that matter. I know there's great mods on here and thanks for creating them but I would really like to try it for my self for different games and so on.

 

How do i go about it?

 

What program do i need?

 

and how do i actually do it?
