Certain mods

Now I am aware that there are (several?) mods available that add NPC's to the game that generally attempt to do what the player does (dungeon crawl, etc), in order to create the illusion that the oblivion world does not only revolve around you and that you also have competitions... anyways if you have links to them I would much appreciate if you posted them all here...

I only know of the one I did, and while I was more concerned about having the rotation logic worked out, the NPCs do end up doing some dungeon crawling on the weekends. In my experience, atleast from making and testing one, this sort of thing usually doesn't work too well outside specific quest parameters. NPCs basically don't do anything outside the player's current cell, they don't move, they don't fight, they don't do anything. This means that unless you're in there with them, nothing will happen. Then there's the fact that NPCs don't normally loot corpses, and trying to make them loot anything beyond a single specific item type just doesn't work. You can kinda fidge this with scripting, but out side of specific instances, I havn't had any luck.

Now this is not to say that there may not be one or two mods out there that actually perform as wanted, but I really wouldn't get my hopes up. Crowed roads, while limited to exterior areas near roads, will probably provide you with the NPC vs NPC action you want better than any of them. There are also a few companion mods out there that may provide what you are looking for (you've got to be there anyway to see anything happen).

I think NPC do something when you're not in the cell - i once stopped all AI in the console, and eventually forgot to turn it up again - and when i got to IC (i was at anvil) i saw NPC standing in front of the gates and houses, doing nothing. Then i remembered it. :D
