I've found that using if you have the original texture open in another window, desaturate it, darken it, lower the contrast, then paste it into the _n file with only the alpha layer active, you usually have a good place to start. The white areas of the alpha shine more, the darker areas shine less. You can use this to make certain parts more/less shiny than others to create the specific look you want. This is just as true for weapons, but is less noticable because most of what you have is supposed to be shiny. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

One of those tabs is "channels". With your normal map as the active project, click the tab and turn off RGB, turn on Alpha. If you don't have an alpha channel, you may need to look for some way of adding one. The alpha channel of the _n texture determines how shiny it it.
