A potential fix for the disappointing "synth" story aspect

Warning, long post! Sorry.

***SUMMARY - A request for a mod that makes the gen 3 synths more robotic by functionally giving them a synth endoskeleton that can be revealed via extremity damage.

So after playing through a large part of Fallout 4 and being hugely pleased with the game in general, one aspect really buggers my buns the wrong way. That is the whole thing about "synths" and the railroad and freedom etc. as well as their general presence in the game. I was hugely disappointed when I learned that the gen 3 synths are functionally human beings. They are mostly organic with minor synthetic components. Though there is no hard proof, I would wager their brains follow suit - mostly organic, minor synthetics. So they are fundamentally augmented humans.

So why is their "plight" a significant part of the story? "These humans are slaves and want freedom," that is the most boring, predictable story ever. They would have been a thousand times more interesting if they were mostly mechanical and only partly organic (like skin, digestive organs, and blood) because then its actually surprising and meaningful when you lean these robots want freedom. No sh*t a basic organic human with some minor augmentations wants freedom, duh.

Anyway, I feel like a simple mod would actually fix this - at least in the players eyes. I beg that someone makes the synths, well, synthetic!

Aside from giving them rad + poison immunity across the board, I would also label them as robots (which they are not labeled as in game).

And now for the big part. Aside from the torso, which can't be gibbed (blown to pieces) I would apply 2 models (or more like 1.5 models) to every character tagged as a gen 3 synth. Use an altered (stretched shortened, however necessary) gen 1 synth - the basic endoskeleton without the meshwork around it like in gen 2s - model and place it underneath the human model. Remove the torso from the synth model since the torso can't be gibbed on robots, and thus it would never be revealed. (This is mostly due to the fact that the torsos on synths have dimensions that would never fit inside a human model i'm guessing.) Anyway, remove the ability to completely gib the head as well since that would potentially cause issues.

So why not gib the head? Well, if you gibbed the head in particular, things like eyes and brain matter can come flying out. That would leave 4 eyes (2 on the synth skull and 2 celebrating their new found freedom as they fly through the air) and brain matter (which the synths shouldn't have). So doubles of anything, or something that a synth shouldn't have would be an issue. Safer - and easier- to just make the head its self indestructible and just have the synth wires and pieces sticking out of the neck.

Now that their arms, legs, and head have the human model on top and the synth model underneath, here's what I would do. At this point, one could publish the mod and it would be stellar as it is. But if they wanted to go to infinity and beyond, they should somehow add two destruction values to the extremeties. One for the human model, and one for the synth model. I am not sure if this is possible, so if it isn't then I guess just make sure that when you blow a piece off of someone, it spews some sore and sparks and that the synth model is clearly visible sticking out from the organic pieces. (Like the neck having wires and metal sticking out from it on both ends, upper arms, legs etc all have wires and synth bits sticking out.)

However, if it IS possible to add 2 gib values to an extremity (which I guess we'll only know when the creation kit and the script extender get realeased) I would give the human model an easier gib value than the synth model extremities. This way, it would be possible to blow the flesh off of a gen 3 synths arm without yet blowing off the synth arm, and not crippling them yet - but revealing the endoskeleton.

I really hope I am not alone on this, and that other people feel that if the gen 3 synths were actually robotic in nature then it would intensify the impact of their presence. Suddenly these machines would feel like frightening enemies merely wearing a human guise when they are your enemy, yet when they are on your side they would be something intriguing and mysterious yet still strangely human despite not being so.

I don't know really how to explain it, but having them be ACTUAL androids rather than slightly altered humans feels like it would have a large impact on the game and the story.

Whew, so THAT was a mouthful. I really would attempt to make this mod on my own but I have no experience making mods myself and, though I have NO real clue, it does seem a bit technical. Thank you so much if you read all the way to here! Cheers to you!

Heh, it's such a great game that my main complaint is that the synths just aren't synthetic. Hype train has arrived at GotY city. Choo Choo!

EDIT: Would love to hear your feedback and ideas!

Wow, that is a long post. But I do totally agree with you. I kinda wanted to make a mod where you could play as a synth, but after I learned that they are pretty much just humans that went out the window. The whole "are they more than machines" thing does kinda ring untrue now. Did you also notice how throughout the game they subtly try to tell you multiple times that they arent human? Like Glorys dialogue for instance. Why not just MAKE them not human then lol.

PS. maybe put a summary at the beginning of the post? i dunno
