Hi.

I have one simple question!!

Why when I install a mod fox example with new textures, the NMM install the new texture files in to Data folder and in to some virtual folder???

For what, to waist my SSD space? Now I have 500 MB less space on SSD. All mods are installed and the files are duplicated in Data folder and Virtual folder, THIS IS A WASTE OF SPACE ON SSD !!!

All mods I have to install manual because there is no other MOD managers for F4. NMM is a pain in ass if you have to use virtual folder !!!

NiKuTa,

The Virtual Install is where the actual files are located. The files in the Data folder may say that they are taking up the same amount of space as the actual files but are actually a kind of shortcut known as a "symbolic link" that really takes up very little space. While shortcuts are just files that redirect users to a file, symbolic links are location references that trick programs into thinking that the files are actually there when they really aren't.

When you look at the properties of a symlink, you are really seeing the metadata of the file they are referencing. The system sees the same thing and cannot differentiate the difference. This metadata is what allows the symlink to act as though it were the actual file.

So yes, the only mod files that take up actual space is in the Virtual Install folder and not in the Data folder itself, even if system states otherwise.

Here is some light reading material about Symbolic links (Symlinks) and Hard links that NMM uses if you are curious: http://www.diskferret.com/help/Links%20and%20Shortcuts.htm

Do you know what symlinks are and how they work? They will appear to be real files because they link you to the location where the actual file is. The symlink is like the card file at the library. It is not the book, but tells you a lot about the book as well as where to find it. One piece of information it shows is the size of the actual file where it is located. Because of MS not bothering to fix it since WinXP, a symlink will show the file size as if it were the actual file when it is not. Check the hard disk size before and after adding a new mod to see what the actual change is.

This is the Network News and announcement forum not a game or NMM discussion topic

If you have a problem with a game - post in the forums for THAT game ( we support 232 games here and each one has it's own forum)

If you are not getting answers and you posted in the wrong forum, you are not being ignored - it's just the people that answer questions don't look in the wrong forums for questions

If you have a problem with the NMM post in the forum for NMM http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/forum/439-open-beta-feedback/

Several off topic posts removed - if one was yours please find the proper forum and you may get answers to your question.
