InfiniteCastor
In all my years of modding F:NV, I have found that the biggest problem with establishing a stable install is the data directory. Each time I attempt to put together a modset, the data folder ends up becoming polluted in some way and mods end up losing valuable data in overwrites, causing all manner of errors. No matter how hard I work to maintain the integrity of existing mods whenever I install a new one, something is always corrupted and does so permanently, often resulting in a deeply-ingrained problem that cannot be traced to a specific file without extremely arduous search and can only be resolved through a full re-installation, which has grown tiresome rather fast. For this reason I would like to find out: how might I better manage this folder? Is it possible to compartmentalize the various assets that mods add? Are there any utilities which can work to protect critical mod data and honour their demands? Thanks in advance.
Ladez
I tend to pack the assets associated with a mod into a BSA file to keep things neat and clean. This doesn't work with dialogue audio files, but they're already organized in folders by plugin name, so I can live with that. A lot of people these days are using Mod Organizer, which uses a virtual file system and allows you to set up multiple profiles with different mod setups. I don't have any experience with it myself, preferring to do everything manually, but if you're using a lot of mods it may be worth trying for you.
