Controller not detected by the game.

Nevermind that the keyboard/mouse controls are absolute crap, my workaround was to hotplug in a controller when I wanted to use the settlement editor. KB/M for normal game, gamepad for settlements. I've done this many times over the past ~40 hours of gameplay. At any point in the game, I plug in the controller and just used it without any problem.

But tonight, all of a sudden, the gp stopped working. Win 8.1 dings on plugin, but the game ignores it completely. I've used the Fallout4 config tool which went off without a hitch... it basically is just an interface to edit the config files.

These have been my troubleshooting steps

  • I exited/restarted the game
  • I used a different controller
  • I verified that settings > gameplay > controller = ON.
  • Windows sees it fine as the device panel sees and reads it's controls.
  • I used the config tool to disable > save > enable the gamepad which also had no effect.
  • I removed the config files and let the game rebuild them
    • c:/user/monsto/documents/my games/Fallout4Prefs.ini
    • c:/user/monsto/documents/my games/Fallout4.ini
    • g:/program files/valve/steam/steamapps/common/fallout 4/Fallout4.ini
  • made sure the config files are not read-only.

I'm re-installing the game from scratch as I type this. moved all the configs out of the way and checked the registry for "Fallout4", "FO4" and "Beth" (zero results in all)

Without being able to use the gamepad for the settlement editor, the game is unplayable. The key config that I've used for every other game i've played over the last 23 years (since doom, but excepting where it was broken in skyrim as well.) is completely broken and unusable in the editor. The only movement key that works is S-strafe left because E, D, F are forced to something else by the game, overwriting my custom keys instead of honoring them. So I plug in a controller . . . except now the game doesn't see the controller.

Any t-shoot thoughts? Is there yet a keymapping-fix mod?

Suggestion: allow custom keymaps to change the occurrence of a key thruout the entire game. This business of only accepting the change sometimes is, at best, annoying. Even the keymap that the game forces on me changes thruout different sections of the game, which is 100% immersion-breaking as I have to STOP to think about and remember what key does what.

If keymapping worked as expected, as is consistent in peer games, then I wouldn't be having a controller problem. I would never have used it.

Bump!

Same thing.. Logitech F310, perfectly functional, but recently in the last month or so this stopped working. This makes the game unplayable for me because wrist/hand injury makes keyboard/mouse too uncomfortable.

I already have done the steps above as well, I do not want to have to map my keys out on the Gamepad, that's flipping stupid. This Gamepad has worked for 800-900+ hours of Fallout 4, and after an update from Steam and/or Fallout 4, I can't use it anymore? It is functional in all other games and I even tried to us the Logitech Gamepad tool and selected Fallout 4 as the game being played.... Does not work.

Please, Please, Help!

Cant say much on Win 8.1 seeing as how I went from 7 straight to 10 but on 7 I was having to use aftermarket controller programs to get my Logitech AfterGlow to work but Win10 recognized and been working flawlessly even in FO4 with no remapping needed. I actually play game by the controller and just use KB for console commands and such. Only prob I have had is the "AfterGlow" X-Box controllers only seem to last 3 or 4 months before buttons start sticking on them. A stuck button causes game freeze or even no load. Have you tried taking about 5 or 6 cotton balls and saturating with rubbing alcohol and then just scrub your controller down? As in HARD SCRUB, specially the buttons? Unplug 1st of course but by using excess alcohol it will clean deep into it and then in less than a minute simply evaporate.

Any fix yet, This just happened to me. 1000+ hours in this game with an XBOX one controller and no problems. I went to play last night after not playing for a couple weeks and the controller has no functionality. Thought it was the controller I was using as it is an aftermarket P.O.S from Walmart. So I went and purchased a new XBOX controller and have the same result, controller functionality is now non-existent. PC/Windows 10 recognizes the controller but Fallout 4 does not.

Really frustrating that every time the game updates, something else breaks.
