lostinmymind
i've got a bug for all of you out there: patched obliv to v 1.2, and now it forces my comp to restart randomly. sometimes it'll be 15 minutes in, sometimes 5, sometimes right as i load it up. used to run fine last time i installed it, since then i upgraded my graphics card (GeForce 7900 GS 256MB with the newest drivers, upgraded to 1 GB ram). everything else i run on my comp runs perfectly, this is the only game that's messed up. (others that i run fine are: STALKER, HL2, BF2, CoD2) any help will be greatly appreciated. and yes, i have run fresh installs at least 3 times, each time this poo happens. elpiggo
Are you using Windows? Try configuring some settings there, or try a new operating system. (On a virtual PC to test it).
skullmosher
Sounds like bad RAM, actually. I had this problem a while back with Medieval: Total War 2. I thought it was the game. My comp kept giving me BSOD, black screens and random reboots. Before you waste a lot of time chasing a ghost, try replacing your RAM. You're problem might go away. Abramul
First, though, I'd suggest reinstalling Oblivion, and only patching to 1.1.(You did mention that you reinstalled, but you didn't say if you patched or not)
lostinmymind
oh for vulk's...... question about ram: if it's bad, how is it that it only affects Oblivion and no other memory-intensive game? going to reinstall and try running 1.0 for a while, see what i come up with. skullmosher
oh for vulk's...... question about ram: if it's bad, how is it that it only affects Oblivion and no other memory-intensive game? going to reinstall and try running 1.0 for a while, see what i come up with. A couple of reasons, actually. For starters, it is very possible that some games won't utilize higher portions of memory. Also there are questions of how information is stored and retrieved. A stuck bit in the higher portion of a long word (0xffffffff) will never be noticed if that memory block is only used for short words (0xffff1234). There is also a possibility of a leaky cap near the Vcc pin of a chip that causes voltage to sag under certain loading conditions. And lastly there is the possibility of dust under the heat spreader. Dust is dead skin and skin is usually salty, so you get a nice little sodium trace placed randomly between two pins just for fun. So... yeah. It could be bad memory. Last time I had this problem my comp worked fine playing GRAW, HL2, Farcry, but it choked when playing M2TW. I didn't think it was memory at first. I replaced mobo, cpu, power supply, video card and finally found it was the memory all along. Now I start with the memory and work back the other way.... As always, YMMV.
