Modding a current save

Hi all

 

This is my first time ever modding a fallout game so forgive my ignorance :)

 

i have a save game that I played on and would now like to add some mods to the game.

Will the mods im installing also work in my current save game or would i need to restart with a new character?

 

Im thinking that this might be up to the kind of mod?

 

like if i add a visual enhancement mod it would apply to all saves?

but if i add a mod that changes my maximum carry weight or adds scrap to my workbenches i need to start a new game?
