To Quest or not to Quest?

  1. 1. Which direction should the mod take?

    • Story based: Branching quest-lines come first; smaller followers come as potential rewards.
      7
    • Follower based: Arasdir as a fully voiced unique follower first; story is less important.

    • I have another idea for you Airtight! (If so please post it below...)

Hello everyone, I would like to reach out to the community for my WIP mod: Arasdir Crassus. I decided to create a new post for this because I want to catch the interest of people who have looked at my previous post, but are uninterested in the mod. You see, I am leaning towards changing the purpose and focus of the mod and would like feedback to see if the idea is well received. I know there are many amazing custom voiced followers out there, and there are also those people who are uninterested in using new followers. That combined with the fact that my voice actor I had been working with for Arasdir has fallen out of contact for the last two weeks. I also am shorter on time than I originally thought I would be. College is tough and gives a lot of work, and some days after working on a tough computer science assignment I just don't have the energy in me to do any more work on computers. All of these facts lead to my conclusion: I would like to change the focus of my mod from a follower based on to a story based one.

The mod would still involve the story of Arasdir and the mysterious Traveler as I was orignally planning. However I would now focus more on providing a good episodic story, and less on providing a custom voiced follower. Time allowing, I would still like to offer Arasdir as a follower at the end of the quest-line depending on player choice and ending, and possibly allow for a few other characters to be followers as well. I feel taht This approach will allow players to invest time into a story where they come to care about characters, make important choices, and at the end of the day be rewarded for the work they did, or face the consequences of their actions. If the player doesn't like Arasdir as a character, they shouldn't be forced into being rewarded with his presence as a follower. There should be tangible rewards for those who don't like playing with followers, even if it means less of a focus on the follower aspect of the mod.

If I change the path of the mod, I would plan to release it in sections as I get it done. Kind of like a new game in a series being released after months of work. Each "episode" would feature a stand-alone quest line and a few quests linked to the overarching story, all of which tie into player choices that affect the smaller episodic stories, and the overall story. So basically what I am asking is; is there interest in this concept? Or would sticking with Arasdir be a better option? Please let me know what you think in both the poll above and the comments below. Thanks for taking time out of your day to read this long post!

sounds pretty reasonable to me and it doesn't make the Arasdir Mod less desirable in the slightest. So go for it, mate!

I mean, let's face it: Inigo, Vilja, Sophia, etc etc ... there are a couple of well executed companion mods on the Nexus. A party can get too large!

But everybody loves a good story, amirite? Personally, I'd like a good plot more than just another dude who travels Skyrim with me :)

I voted for the story-based one because:

1. Like you stated, not everyone wants to have a new interesting follower, but almost everyone would want to play a great story.

2. I believe that you'll learn a lot more and be more encouraged to finish and work on the project if you get good feedback. Not to say that you don't have the motivation to pull it off, but it's better overall to get your work out there :)

3. I'll probably do the same thing for Fallout 4 once the CK is out, so I want to see how this format works out for you :D

Anyways, the best of luck to you! Looking forward to seeing what you'll come up with!

Thanks for the input! I'm really looking forward to playing your mod LordBound when it comes out. I'm definitely excited to work with episode based stories as it will allow me to take the player to a variety of places, with a bunch of changing characters and a few reoccurring ones. I'm definitely leaning towards the switch to a story focused mod right now.

I definitely see why more people would enjoy a good story focused mod, and so far I have enjoyed making the story of Arasdir more than I have the follower. So it is very likely that I will make the switch, thanks for your feedback!

  • 2 weeks later...

Alright, I think I am going to go ahead with the quest focused approach. Don't worry, there may be more custom voiced follower opportunities during the mod, it's just none will have thousands upon thousands of lines of dialogue. I've been making pretty good progress, but mostly just implementing voice lines and finishing up packaging. I'll make a new post with a flashy new mod name and some more descriptive info sometime in the near future though!
