Psyclosarin
Hey all,I've been interested in modding for a very long time and have been using mods since as long as I can remember, but I've never gotten around to learning how to do it myself. I've had a look through files and have a vague idea on how a 2D texture is applied to a 3D model, but no idea what software to use to 1: Retexture without looking like crap and 2: How to go about using them so they'e compatable. Main question is, how do I get started out, what kind of checklists would I need to do to ensure things work properly so I'm not left with a purple "texturenotfound" texture.Lastly, I'll be starting out on Fallout 4 because that's what I'm wasting most of my waking hours outside of work on :P So this will generally centre around that, for now. Oubliette
For texture work the program you'll need is either Photoshop (expensive) or GIMP (free) you'll also need a .dds plugin for whichever program you decide to get (dds is the format textures are generally saved in for Bethesda games). As to how to use those programs, specifically, it's way too much to explain in a single post, I would look up tutorials for the program of your choice and get started familiarizing yourself with their functions first, then work on a few recolors before jumping to creating brand new textures of your own. It sounds simple but I assure you it isn't, which is why there are so few original texture artists around. People usually use others work, free resources or slight changes in noise and color palette instead of all the grunt work of making original textures from scratch; not that you can't do some very nice work using resources like that. Even the texture artists known for doing entirely hand painted textures have mostly moved on to mesh making or paying platforms or other hobbies entirely at this point. Good luck. Psyclosarin
Brilliant, cheers for the info. I still have GIMP installed from when I was making icons with transparent sections so I'll dust that off and have a look at some tuts as well. As for ripping the base textures out of the game to edit, any suggestions on how to do that/what applications can be used?
