seedy
I was fighting a pirate, when a begger leapt between me and the pirate, got chopped down by my sword, adding a murder to my character and destroying the quest where you have to give a coin to each begger. This was really annoying, and preventable if oblivion had a function where you couldn't hit friendlies. If only reality had that too! This applies to all companions, summoned creatures, anyone on the same faction. Ideally you would hit whatever they were targetting instead, as in in everquest 2, or at least some sort of assist function would let you assist your companion. As it stands, companions are more trouble to me than they are worth because oblivion combat has everyone zooming about like fighter planes whilst fighting. (which makes no sense at all, seriously, what were they thinking, especially as combatants run in any direction with the same speed and never fall over, and can sprint without fatigue whilst fighting in the sort of armor you would need a horse to move about with in reality) At the moment, if i cast a lightning bolt or fire an arrow, enemies easily walk out of the path, and my friends blindly walk into it.
Vagrant0
(which makes no sense at all, seriously, what were they thinking, especially as combatants run in any direction with the same speed and never fall over, and can sprint without fatigue whilst fighting in the sort of armor you would need a horse to move about with in reality)They weren't thinking, simple as that. The only companion they give you are either summons which are just throw aways, and an adoring fan who seems more like a joke (and is usually used as such) than a companion. With radiant AI, this may have been less of an issue, but as they scrapped it, or toned it down (I don't think anyone's actually seen anything like what they were promising) in favor of predictible NPCs who don't break your games. But with the AI and scripting as it is, it is incredibly difficult to even have non-combatants do anything too complicated, trying to make them adapt to something as mindless and chaotic as the average player would be impossible. Instead they just have the NPCs run a set combat AI, and force the player to adapt to the action. If you were so concerned about not killing others, you should have probably brought your fight somewhere that wouldn't happen, just like reality. If you think your fights are bad, try it when you've upped the movement speed of everything, and don't have a constant 30 frames a second. I've turned off the disposition and hit limitss when hitting friendlies in my game out of necessity.
