Abnaxis
So, I'm a newbie when it comes to modding. I started on a mod for Skyrim once, but it was too ambitious for my attention span (I wanted to inject nGCD-style attributes into the system) As of two days ago, I have a shiny new Steam Controller that I want to use with FO4... By default, if I enable controller mode in the game, my new piece of hardware works like an XBox controller with a trackball for a right-stick. I prefer it over the XBox controller, but there's extra buttons and mode-switching capability that don't do anything, all while functionality gets left out because an XBox controller doesn't have enough buttons for "Auto-Run," "Wait," or "Switch to a favorite weapon in a reasonable manner." I can do better I decided to get tricky and play in keyboard mode. Subsequently, I lost my analog joystick--I am trapped in the doldrums of only eight intercardinal directions and two speeds. Also, the interface becomes an absolute mess, because of course I can't rebind the menu buttons. What was I thinking? I'm thinking I can do better. Autohotkey doesn't help me here, because I want to use a joystick. Googling around, it appears as though all the problem keybindings are stored in a bunch of XML files in the main .esm. Without having unpacked the .esm to have a looksee yet, I'm thinking of either starting with the controller config files, and adding more buttons, or going through the keyboard config files, remappig them to something sane, and adding a joystick. The former option could be less less work, but I'm keen on the latter so I can use a mouse in the inventory interface. Finally, I'm going to mod my game to make me happy, but if I'm going through all this work, I want to do it right. I want to make a proper mod (along with a steam controller config file), that I can install and uninstall, and share with others when I'm done. Does all of this seems like a reasonable goal? Is there a guide somewhere that will let me know how to package this properly? Edited December 1, 2015 by Abnaxis
