new cd copy of GOTY, asking for activation key?

Hey guys, I'm new here and registered just to find some help for my Oblivion issue. I've played the game since its release on older computers and never had a problem (got a really old cd copy ages ago). I just tried installing on my new Windows 7 machine and used the same old cd and it asked for an activation key for internet registration. Of course I'm confused, because I've never needed one before. So I decide ok, this is an old game, lost my packaging, despite all the forum posts saying you don't need a key to run the game if you bought a physical copy, maybe I'll go out and buy the GOTY edition and install that instead. So, I uninstall Oblivion, head out and buy GOTY, install it on my computer and .... it asks for an activation key. I have tried unplugging the internet and it just tells me to connect. I can alter my options menu, check off data files I want to use/not use, but if I hit 'play' it sends me to an activation screen.

At my wits end here, googled various combinations of words (other than the curse words in my mind at this point) and am having no luck with resolving this issue or even finding anyone else with the same problem. Is this a windows 7 issue? How do I resolve it? If anyone can help me out that would be fantastic. I sent bethesda's customer support an email but I don't know if/when they will be able to respond with a fix.

Many thanks in advance!

My guess is when you uninstalled the first one, it didn't uninstall everything and that wanting an activation key is one of the things that wasn't uninstalled.

Try this & let us know if it works or not. You will have to go through the entire uninstall. Pay special attention to the part about removing the registry entries and be sure you reboot both immediately before and after running a registry cleaner.

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexus

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.

Thanks a lot, I went through the complete uninstall/reinstall process and that did the trick. Much obliged :)
