Discussion: BSA files don't work with Fallout 4.

I think the issue might be, Fallout 4 just doesn't read the BSA format, so we will have to wait 'til we can archive to BA2

Reasoning:

I found the vanilla BA2 for which I had downloaded a retexture. I extracted the B2A, and re-packed it to BSA, and replaced the B2A with the BSA as well as in the "sResourceIndexFileList" line in the "ini".

- Fallout 4 can read modded textures just fine, given that loose files work.

- BSA with modded textures doesn't work.

- Replacing vanilla B2A with an equivalent BSA results in pink, aka textures not recognized.

My conclusion: Fallout 4 doesn't know what a BSA is.

On top of this, a byproduct conclusion is that the B2A packs are compressed. Which is good, but also bad, since it means modded textures will have a larger loading time compared to vanilla, though they'll have less cpu consumption. However, disc usage is much more important than cpu usage in this matter, I'd say. This explains why optimized textures take so long to show up, keeping us looking at the blurry ugly time-placeholders, which doesn't happen with vanilla textures.

I thought you modders might wanna know about it, or maybe you know stuff about it that I don't? Ideas?

While I start to believe that this holds true for textures packed inside .bsa archives, the mod "Time on loading screen" comes in the .bsa format as well (no textures included) and works perfectly fine.
Considering vanilla .bsa archives have always been somewhat compressed, it's no surprise to me that the new .ba2 format is compressed as well. As far as I believe to know, there are two "types" of .ba2 archives, one of them being optimized for textures specifically (I read something about this on the net, unfortunately I can't quite recall where).

I'm kinda glad to see that I'm not the only one unable to get .bsa texture archives to work, though. I kinda felt like the odd one out inbetween all the reports of huge performance improvements using certain mods.

Thanks for your post, please keep it coming as soon as you find out something new!

Edit: I'm slightly confused, I meant to post this in the thread that DaDump linked. I think it fits here as well, though.

if u cant exec BSA with esp file - just hard-link it into follout.ini: for example: w512 mod (11 BSA files).

replace src ba2 to bsa from mode here:

sResourceIndexFileList=Wastenland512 - Textures1.bsa, Wastenland512 - Textures2.bsa, Wastenland512 - Textures3.bsa, Wastenland512 - Textures4.bsa, Wastenland512 - Textures5.bsa, Wastenland512 - Textures6.bsa, Wastenland512 - Textures7.bsa, Wastenland512 - Textures8.bsa, Wastenland512 - Textures9.bsa, Wastenland512 - Textures10.bsa, Wastenland512 - Textures11.bsa

but problem here: not all textures are correctly working. so waiting for newer archiver to ba2...[ 2016 year =( ]

P.S. something like that

Ok so I got them to load, by adding the Wastenland512 - Textures1.bsa, Wastenland512 - Textures2.bsa, etc to the sResourcefileIndexlist command [but not replacing the .ba2 lines...just adding them].

I tested it (by removing all the ba2 files from the DATA folder)... and saw that they loaded, along with some pink textures too.

I then stuck back all the ba2 files into the DATA folder and started it up and it seemed to work... but honestly, I don't know since I can't tell between the mod's textures and the originals.

Do you still have loose files in your /Data/texture sfolder, by any chance? They'd override the archives. I tried it again, and it didn't work for me.

Bump.

Does anyone have an idea? Any experiences regarding textures in .bsa archives for this game?

Honestly I'm not sure where anyone got the idea to use .bsa files? They moved to a new format with good reasons, no sense in supporting the old format for the game.

I don't know either, but I think the idea was to speed up access times on big retexture projects (In the gigabyte range) compared to loose files, and bridge the time until a .ba2 packer is released.
