Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm new to modding, I've made only one (very small) Building Mod, a hunters cabin. And thats it, I want to get into more modding like creating mesh and texture for my own objects, weapons, armor ect.

And I have one very general question- How?

How do you creat mesh and or tetures,

where to go,

what to do.

any links for How To's and such would be very apreciated.

or any help, hints, tips and whatnot.

E-mail me please if you have anything tht may help me.

The two big things you'll need:

-A 3D modeling program. 3DStudioMax and Blender are two common ones i think

-A image program. YOu probably already have one though. I use Paintshop pro cause thats all I have. Most people use Adobe Photoshop.

Other little programs you may need:

-BSA Unpacker, allows you to get too the oblivion models and textures if you want to use them as a base for youre own work.

-DDS Converter for changing DDS image files to something you can work with, then changing them back again.

-A 3D modle importer for the CS or something like that. You can get that off the elderscrolls website.

And one last thing you may want:

-Practice, and lots of it. Texturing is easy if you have experience with the program. Modeling takes practice if you want to create new stuff from scratch.

You might want to get Nifscope as well- it is a very useful utility for working with nif files. You might also want to download one of the nif plugins for whatever 3d modelling program you use from their website too.

And a good alternative to using the dds converter is to get a dds plugin for your image editing program. I recomend geting Gimp. You can find the dds plugin here. If you have the relevant model open in Nifscope while you edit the texture with this, evry time you save the file, it updates the changes in Nifscope, so you can see how it will appear on the model as you work.

Finally, a good page to check out for other useful tools for working with textures is this one.
