(Fallout 4) Audio Popping & Light Lag

Recommended Posts

I'm getting some audio popping and terrible lag when I'm indoors and in well lit rooms. Also get the occasional lag when I'm in cities, but that is expected. Besides that, the game runs pretty well. I just updated my drivers which didn't seem to help.

Processor: AMD FX™-8120 Eight-Core Processor at 3.1 GHz

RAM: 8GB (2GB VRAM)

Card: AMD Radeon HD 7600 Series

Does anyone have any advice on how to fix these problems I'm having?

I get audio popping rarely... and then my sound cuts out. But it's actually a Windows 10 start menu/Cortana bug that Microsoft still hasn't fixed..

Which begs the question: what's your OS?

I also run with

  • Processor
    Intel Core i7 4790
  • Memory
    32 GB DDR3
  • Motherboard
    MSI MS-7817
  • Graphics Card:
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4GB
  • Soundcard
    Onboard [default]
  • Monitor Size
    24"
...and I still get frame drops so that's 'normal'. XD

I have windows 10 as well. Would disabling Cortana fix the issue?

I've had Cortana disabled since upgrade, it doesn't matter.

Just waiting on an update from Microsoft to fix this. Windows 10 is basically still in beta it feels like so there's a lot of things that need some fixing.

For good measure, I'd make sure your audio/video drivers are all up to date and that your hardware (speakers/headphones) are in good working shape.

Something more generic (I'm not at all challenging Windows 10 being a bug-ridden mess), but audio pops/clicks can sometimes be indicative of the audio hardware itself overheating. If this were the problem, you could reasonably expect the same behavior in other games/applications that heavily load the system (and thus produce more heat). Just something to think about more than anything else. This would not explain the stutters or lag ofc.

I haven't had this problem in other games like skyrim with 30+ mods. Unless the Fallout 4 sound is more complex than skyrim, I don't think that's the problem. But it could be I'm not sure.

Audio hardware overheating is a thing?

Psssh, nothing is safe anymore. D:

Then I'd guess it isn't the audio hardware; it would be "all or nothing." And it isn't overheating due to being over-worked (modern game audio is software based anyways), but due to the computer itself warming up and the hardware warming.

Yeah, it can be. It isn't a "new" thing either - IME it is/was more of an issue for stand-alone soundcards, especially if placed closely next to (or between) hot-running GPUs and/or in a system with poor ventilation. IME it isn't the most common of problems, but it came to mind when thinking about random audio clicks/pops while gaming.
