i know most people use gimp for editing textures in bethesdas games, but im more familiar with PS.

 

I can edit, save and use .dds files well enough for diffuse maps in PS but pretty much anything that isnt just a flat texture I cant seem to get working correctly. I can pretty much guarantee that my problem is that I dont really know what .dds textures are. ( however i am not asking for instruction on what everything is, i just want to know how to save each image type properly, i dont care about the technical information )

 

the ones im having problems with at this exact moment are the character tattoo and facepaint textures. No matter what I do they dont seem to work, the tattoos have an alpha but no matter what I change they dont "update" in the game, i could make the alpha pure white and have scribbles all over the texture but they look exactly like vanilla when i import them.

The facepaint texture is even weirder because it doesnt even have an alpha, its just a simple grey scale image, but when i import those they dont show up at all, seemingly overwriting the vanilla with a blank image.

figured out the facepaint problem, have to save it as a DXT1 - no alpha, greyscale image and that worked.

 

is it possible to edit these in PS? i really prefer it over gimp
