I'm currently following the guide and building my first cave. the problem is that I have put a piece into the Render Screen but it's just above the piece it's supposed to connect to. They have the same Z number too. Any help on this?

The coordinates don't always mean that things match up, some statics have their base points (what those coordinated refer to) in a different relationship to their actual model. This usually happens when you have statics which cause a change of direction (up, down, left, right) and it's usually just a matter of manually moving them to the right position. Most statics are built around a multiple of 8, meaning that adjustments to the position in a multiple of 8 (8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512...) will usually result in a near seamless match. Some statics, even those of caves which are supposed to fit together, have gaps between them.

I would make sure the X and Y alignment is right, then use the property windows to move the static along the Z axis until it matches.
