I had an idea regarding immersive custom music aside from the Radio Stations already in place: I would like to be able to find holotapes with a single music track on it (or maybe 3-4; in the vein of classic 45's) that you could collect and save/carry with you.

I'm sure you could just switch out currently existing audio files correlating to holotapes, but I don't imagine it would be too difficult to create a holotape entity and link an mp3/wav to it. I have a feeling that the GECK will be required for this, but I'd just like someone elses opinion/to put the idea out there for anyone interested in this concept.

Especially with the option to play a holotape as soon as you find it, I think discovering era-appropriate (or not, I don't care how you live your life) holotape singles would be kind of special, sort of like magazines/comics, except you will revisit the ones you like etc.

I also just had a string of thought that perhaps the Jukebox could be altered to store/play/cycle through whatever holotape tracks you store in it, rather than just play one radio station.

Interesting Long-Term Idea:

Someone creates an alternative radio station with a physical location that behaves much like DCR but with different songs, providing a few additional dialogues without mentioning specific song names in case we want to add more songs. Other people could submit mods in the form of Music Holotapes, that can be listened to on their own, or submitted to the radio station and added to that playlist. Hell, maybe even allow us to create copies so we can give the DJ a copy, then put others in Jukeboxes at our settlements.... Functional Jukeboxes in wwhich you get to choose the songs!

Unfortunately we are hamstrung by copyright law here. We CANNOT allow any copyrighted music - and nearly all music is copyrighted.

Any mod that includes copyrighted music will be removed and the uploader could be banned.

There are a few sites that have public domain music that you can use. But most is by artists you have never heard of or is over 60 years old.

Well 60+ years old is exactly what I had in mind, not sure about OP.

Great Idea!

And should be easy to make. I test it with some ingame music.

What about a mod that will just play music you already have on your PC Hard Drive? No copyright infringement claim can be made if you own the music. Just basically an mp3 player in your pipboy you can tune to.

It would require the user to convert and rename all audio files to be played in game. But yea, possible.

I actually already made something like this for myself, it replaces existing holotapes though. I can have up to 5 songs on a single holotape but you can't change the order they play in so you either accept that or (like i do) have multiple holotapes with all the different songs.

Uploading a mod like that is a bit tricky though, with varying taste and copyrights involved.

How could there be any copyright infringement when all you are doing is making an mp3 player? You aren't sharing any music or copyright protected material.

You really just need something that you would set a directory to the folder with the music you want it to play.

I think it might be better if you made it run from a radio station though, if that is even possible.

It should be noted I am not looking for a mod that provides new music in game, just more or less a new way to incorporate custom audio files into the game immersively. Just the vessel for the audio. I think a lot of users are into custom music (as has been proven by previous radio mods) but with the way Holotapes/Jukeboxes function now, I think it provides us a real medium for custom music/audio without having to just tack them on to existing radio stations.

Awesome, let us know how the test goes. I imagine the concept shouldn't be too difficult to execute, just making it into a mod that's user-friendly (well, friendly enough.)

Very cool, I figured that would work the way I'd hoped. I actually like the possibility of multiple tracks that you can't skip as that's how singles used to be released on 45s anyways.

Hopefully we can get someone to add blank ones to the workshop or something and just link them to a folder on your hard drive.

The way holotapes work makes it a real pain to change their audio, you need to use a program to uncompress the voice files, rename all your songs, replace the uncompressed .wav files and compress it back.
