Low Quality Sound Problem

Hey there, I'm trying to get the most immersive experience from Oblivion as possible (since it's environment is so rich). Recently I noticed an issue with sound effects that is starting to become distracting.

It's most audible with footstep sound clips but also affects weapon and other sounds.

The sounds that play randomly switch between a lower-quality (slightly muffled sounding) version, and the regular crisp version. The normal, crisp clips sound great but the constant (and erratic) switching is quite anoying and distracting.

I noticed that there aren't any options in-game for audio hardware or quality settings. Is there another way to change sound settings to see if I can eliminate the problem I am having?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Basically if I swing my sword over and over, some of the "swoosh" sound effects sound normal (nice and crisp) and others sound kind of muffled (and low-quality).

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

This happens with most sound effects but not with character voices. Noticeable with combat and footstep sounds.

Search the forum history on this topic, you will find few similar posts. If it happened after installing SI and 1.2 official patch, there is a mod that fixes the sound. google it.

Install this for starters:

What is the name of the mod that fixes the problem? I've searched for hours in every forum I could find, and I still can't find any fix.

Whoa, I'm having that same problem... I thought it was just normal so I kinda got used to it, but a fix would be nice. The footsteps are what bother me the most, switching between that "muffled" sound and crisp, clear sound always sounded rather odd.

At first I thought it was all in my head, so I tried to just play the game and ignore the problem, but the longer I played the more noticeable it became. I eventually gave up on playing. I've tried several fixes, but nothing works. If anyone has any ideas, I'm sure everyone would be very thankful.

From the control panel, and then the audio settings, after that advanced settings in the speakers and in the next window you can change the option.

It works for me, but you can experience some problem with the music, a very loud buzz sound, but it desappears if you turn of the music from the Ini file of the game.

I really prefer to play without music than a poor quality sound.
