Vectorcide
I want a mod so that I can cut down a tree in the wild and "scrap" it for wood. Lore-wise the current system doesn't make an sense. If it were real, who would travel across the land to another settlement to order a shipment of wood, when they could just walk a few feet farther out of their settlement and cut down a tree? I'm sick of running out of wood, just to see trees standing all of 5 feet outside the green settlement boundary. The scrap wood available in a settlement just isn't enough. The amount I use building a settlement is more than I get from scrapping the trees, etc. It's a net loss, and the only other means of getting wood don't fill the gap well. I make sure to carry every item from an explored location back to my workshop, but the amount of wood is a pathetic trickle that way. Buying shipments is the best way once scrap trees are gone, but its painfully expensive. Again, how does this make sense? Just let me cut down a tree! lol. ....May not be possible without GECK, I don't know, but would be a killer mod.
Sentariel
I was thinking about it too.I think it's possible to make trees like iron/silver/gold/corundum/etc. mines in Skyrim. So 3 hits by Woodcutters axe and we have 1 wood from tree. Different trees will have from 10 to 30 wood in them and will reset in 30-60 days if theres some wood left in tree, and will completly disappear if you cut all wood from it. In this case gathering wood from trees will be free for caps, but a little bit expensive in time (not so much expensive if you order your companion to help you ;D ).More than that. It's the way to make more immersive scrapping. Make trees not scrappable with workshop, but... order your settlers to cut some tree and they will do it in few hours, providing wood to your settlement. I think it would be pretty balanced and immersive.

50cheeze
I've been thinking about this topic as well, but on a larger scale, involving more materials. There would definitely be a lore friendly way to expand on the game's crafting system as mentioned above for trees and such, and for other materials such as concrete and steel. I was thinking something along the line of individual quests that would unlock a sawmill, a quarry, and a scrapyard for the player to use once completed. These areas could produce a small amount of resources on their own (which would need to be connected to the settlements via trade routes) but the player could accelerate the process by fixing additional equipment, cutting down trees, mining, crushing cars/steel objects. Trees could have a respawn rate, as could concrete (those quarries are big anyways), and as for the scrapyard I guess it could restock itself (the nod scavenged cars in the wasteland for example) this could be a great immersive mod, and other materials could be added although these are the big 3, and would simply expand on the existing system. Other expansions could include fusion core charging, animal farming, etc. Anyhow, I have no modding experience, but I'm sure one day something like this will come to be, to the delight of all of us ;)
Sentariel
http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/6728/? Alternative fix. Looked at it yesterday. It's a good variant if you need wood, not care about immersion. It's still not much realistic... and not much balanced... place 10-30 of this farm-trees, and you'll have tons of wood every day or two without any effort even with 5 wood per tree option. Multiply this with 10-15 settlements and you'll be able to bury entire commonwealth under wood. Edited December 27, 2015 by Sentariel
Vectorcide
http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/6728/? Alternative fix. Yea, I saw that mod. Looks promising, but it still doesn't make sense as to why I can't get wood from existing nearby trees. The magical green border... two feet makes the difference between being able to get 30 wood and zero.

Cary an axe for trees, a blowtorch to cut steel from junk cars, a sledgehammer or pick to "mine" concrete from roads, etc. I do like the idea of expanded facilities though if it was done right. I like immersive mods and games. I don't see how this could be made realistic without being made useless in terms of game time. That's why I'm hoping for some way to harvest from all the existing sources that are already all over.
