How do I continue to edit after exiting?

Whenever I exit out of a mod I'm making (after saving of course) and then load it up later and make changes, I am prompted to make a new save for it (which I do, usually the old name with a + after it). The problem is, after activating both .esp's the changes to the original mod don't appear ingame. Is there anything I've done wrong?

You need to make the mod you're working on active when you load it into the CS (little button in lower left corner). If you don't load your mod as active, you won't actually change anything within that mod, but instead any work you do in that session would become its own mod. If the two reference eachother in any way (even moving something added by the other mod) however this doesn't work very well.

The CS doesn't dump the buffers ( memory it uses for your esp ). To make a clean/independant second mod, you must exit from the CS then restart. Create your new mod+ then save. This way there will be no contamination from the previous mod's data. I've been for this ride myself. Only by accident did I discover the "Exit CS between mods" strategy.:)
