An Actual Freeze Ray!

Hey, hey, hey kids - you know what be, um... cool:

 

A scratch-built, standalone freeze ray! One complete with mods and upgrades along the same lines as the lasers and Institute weapons.

 

"But BoogerMan, we already have the cryolator; why do we need with ANOTHER cryo-weapon?"

 

Well, I'll tell ya why boys and girls - for the Coolness Factor (and yes, the pun is intended). While the cryolator is... okay, it's just a glorified liquid nitrogen sprayer. What WE need is an actual freeze ray right out of the Golden Age of Science Fiction... or the comics; like Captain Cold's cold gun or Mister Freeze's freezing gun - a weapon that fires a beam of exotic particles that causes catastrophic heat loss.

 

The Institute Pistol could be used as good starting point - after all, it already has a cool, blue beam. Then switch out its "hit stickers" for the cryolator's (hits on walls, floors, etc causes frost instead of burn-holes) and give it the cryolator's "frozen death" effect. Oh - and when it fires it should have that cryolator steaming or misting effect too.

 

The base damage of this proposed weapon should be considered for game balance; if it's damage type remains "energy" then it should be raised to match the Laser Pistol. If on the other hand its type is changed to "cryo" (like Wendigo007's excellent Better Cryolator mod) then I personally would think that its base damage should stay the same or even be lowered. Why? Well, think about it: no creature or armor that I know of has "cryo resistance", which means that our hypothetical Freeze Ray would ignore ALL defense modifiers - even that of power armor (I actually think this is way Bethesda decided not to use the cryo damage type; it would mean going back and adding another modifier to almost ever piece of armor in the game... just for one weapon).

 

As to appearance, I'm partial to the classic look (sleek, rounded lines and cooling fins, etc), but since I have zero skill at meshes and texturing...

 

Even if no one has an interest in doing this (for shame!), I myself am seriously considering changing the Institute Pistol into the Institute Freeze Pistol when the CK comes out to make these synth weapons different and more dangerous (after all, switching around weapon statistics and effects in the CK is relatively easy, or at least it was for FO3 & FNV); maybe I'll call it the Institute Cold Weapons mod or something.

 

But anyway, if you got this far thanks for reading and I welcome any and all thoughts on this subject.
