Help a plebberoni install item mods .-.

hello there

 

so I am sorta familiar with modding Fallout 3/nv and skyrim but for some reason i can't get fallout 4 to work properly.

the mods that add clothing items and such do show up in the console/crafting benches, but when i try to equip them they don't have any textures like this:

 

supposed to be a nuka cola cap but instead turned me into my math teacher from high school

for the record:

In Fallout4.ini i've added bInvalidateOlderFiles=1 and sResourceDataDirsFinal=

in fallout4prefs.ini i've added bEnableFileSelection=1

 

and in fallout4custom.ini i've added

[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=

 

i've tried resetting archive invalidation through NMM with no luck, all esp's have been checked on.

what am i missing?
