Static vs free flowing graphics

I remember playing tomb raider 1,2,3 when they came out many moons ago and one of the things that was cool at the time was the way her pony tail moved and reacted to the way Laura Croft was moving.

I was wondering why almost 15 years later that a game as good as Oblivion doesn't have the same effect on the hair and other objects like the clothing, but you can find it on certain objects in the game like rope and chains hanging from a ceiling.

Could you imagine playing Oblivion with your Mystic Elf's hair blowing in the breeze? I think it would be very cool.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, it's a curiosity thing.

Well first of all Lara's ponytail is a fixed animation. There are no physics stuff that has to be calculated. If the same action is done twice, the hair will move the same every time.

Oblivion is very demanding. Hair physics would increase the CPU usage even more. Maybe computers can handle it better now, but it would've been difficult in March 06.

Unlike Lara, your character in Oblivion can choose from many different hairstyles, as well as changing the length.

Curiosity eh?

Well, in post from sept.06 that I saw yesterday (Povuholo, you actually made post there in that thread ;) ) , about a mocap animation imported into oblivion, but it is kind of depressing that 9 months on, no one afik is working on a mod incorporating this (mocap) into oblivion... the original creator posted his tutorial on how to go about it with unresolved technical probs and his retirement from oblivion modding...

The tutorial goes over my head, but as a demonstration on what is possible in oblivion if you have that kind of skill in modeling know-how... Bleh, wish I never saw

Meh, who knows, a few years from now some motion capture footage may end up in my lap and I might get bored enough to actually try this. There are still some of the major engine and scripting limitations to deal with, but it looks potentially useful for making idle animations to add that special touch to a mod.

Actually, I found the farewell thread of mr.cellophane yesterday, while browsing forums before going to sleep...which never happened. I have been up about 22 hrs, now sifting through all the stuff on the net relevant to his post.

You would have gotten a kudos, for raising my hopes with that link (to that file in your post) and then taken away ... for the same reason :P

That thing is mind bogglingly good... I wish I could do that o_O ... (Bender: "you would have to metaphorically sell your soul to the devil... and by devil I mean.. robot devil.. and by metaphorically I mean.... Get your coat! ")

Falls under

Besides, I don't think I'll be getting that bored any time soon. And there aren't enough people around to ask when I run into problems.
