eufscht
How come if there is no way for Skyrim to use more memory than 4gig (being a 32-bit game), some PCs can run 4k graphics along with a wide list of script-heavy mods, ENB and general overhauls without much of a dip in performance, while other PCs with more than well enough specs get plagued with constant CTDs, purple textures and general lag when just trying to run 2 or 3 mods? Shouldn't it be the same for everyone?
bben46
Address space means that you have a page with a list of addresses. Every bit of that ram must have an address for the computer to be able to find it. When that page is full, there is no where to put any more addresses. And if the address is not on that page, the computer cannot find it. in a 32 bit program like Skyrim, the page can only hold addresses for 4G of ram and no more. 32 bits means there is only address space for a max of 4gig of ram. Even if you have a lot more ram, the 32 bit computer can only see 4g. It is not made to see more than that. Then, part of that 4g must be used for Windows and other necessary stuff. leaving about 3.5G of ram available. Newer computers are 64bit. But the Version of windows MUST be 64 bit to get the advantages. Skyrim is still a 32 bit program though and is stuck with the limitations of any 32 bit program. But using a 64 bit computer with a 64 bit windows and more than 4 G of ram allows all the other programs running to be moved into in the ran above 4G - allowing Skyrim a little more of the first 4G. It still cannot use more than that because the game address space is still 32 bit with that one page of addresses, even though the Windows itself has 20 pages that it can use - the game cannot use those because it cannot see them Quote Shouldn't it be the same for everyone?Nope, is your computer exactly the same as everyone else's? Or do you use the identical video board, Mother board and monitor as everyone else? Do you have the exact same set of other programs running the exact same data as everyone else? Is your hard drive the same size? Same speed? 7200 RPM? 5400 RPM? or SSD? Every PC is going to be different, even if they start the same the things you do with it will make it different. PCs are very versatile and can do a lot more than just play games. If you want exactly the same as everyone else - get a console. That's what they try to do.
