Elite Spartan
I am considering picking up Oblivion again, and to help "justify" my time playing it, I decided to use it to help me learn German. Therefore, I wanted to install the game in German. However I cannot find out how. I changed the language value in the .ini file, and nothing happened. I tried reinstalling it, and there is no option to choose languages. Is there something I am missing? Are there any mods that do this? I have the english version of the game, and am a native english speaker. I just want to use this game since I've played it so much, I should be familar with it. Is this possible? Any help would be appreciated.
micalov
The german version is its own localised version so you would have to buy a german version, but you may want to try Nehrim its a total convertion mod for oblivion so youll be kind of used to it and all the dialogue pretty much is in english, just all the voice acting is in german, might help+ tbh everyone should try Nehrim it rocks and is what Oblivion should have been. Thanks for the response. So I guess I'm stuck with my game being enlish still. But that overhaul sounds good. I'll have to check it out. It could still prove usefull... Telyn
There are many German versions of mods here. These will usually have DV after the mod name (Deutsch version). If you install those, you may experience loss of voice dialogue and renaming of NPCs and some other items to German names, but you might want that. I think you would get the German text, but hopefully someone can tell you whether that works.

I was now considering using the german version of Nehrim: At Fate's Edge. But then I realized, it the german version works with my english version as I want, EVERYTHING will suddenly be in german. Using a mod or two that changes some english stuff to german as I get used to it will be much better. Thank you for the response. I'll have to go look for some mods now. Telyn
I hope it works. Like I said, it will probably disable the English voice dialogue, but you can disable the German mods if you need to.
bben46
Using German language mods with an English localized version can have varying effects. Worst case it could cause a crash. But most likely it will not and some things may (or may not) be in German - But only those things actually changed by the mods. Usually I am telling people what to do when they have accidentally installed a different language mod and are freaking when a NPC bandit says, "Überreichen Sie Ihr Geld oder ich werde dich töten."
Elite Spartan
So based off your reply, trying to use german mods on the english game is... probably not gonna work as intended. That shouldn't be a problem, I'll just play the full Nehrim german version once I get up to conversation level in the language. If I'm correct, that should still work with my english version since pretty much everything is modded and it even has it's own launcher as I hear. Telyn
As bben said, usually we are telling people how to make the other language go away. I agree that it probably would not cause crashes. A few times I have tested mods that didn't warn the user about the language issue, and I did have NPCs speaking in other languages or shops renamed, etc. without any lasting harmful effects. If you don't bash it into your bash patch it should be pretty easy to disable the mods you added if you use OMOD to install. I wouldn't recommend doing this with a language that uses a different character set, because that can cause problems, but none of the people I have helped get rid of this issue so far reported any issues other than the other language turning up various places until they removed the mod. I wouldn't normally have suggested it except that it's a fairly well known phenomenon in Oblivion which has happened to many people accidentally. It sounded like you were hoping to play regular Oblivion, and it was the only possibility I could think of other than buying the German localized game. On the other hand, I have heard wonderful things about Nehrim. Many Nehrim players feel it far surpasses the vanilla game.
Elite Spartan
Even if I found a mod that merely added a few weapons or something in German, it would only teach me the words for things like "sword" or "axe". Even though those are great words, they aren't that practical today :( I think I'll just stick with bringing my German up than playing Nehrim. I've got some mods to play with on the normal game for now though }:)
