CTD

I'm having this problem where my game CTD's at the squad screen after a UFO mission where I stun the outsider to research it. And thus advance the story. I am attempting to stun it after berserkers/ heavy floaters/ mectoids are popping up. Have I left it a bit late? Is there a timer to progress the story?

Tried a few of the troubleshooting tips. Nothing.

Game breaking bug?

Not sure if a game restart is needed?

cheers

AFAIK, there is no "timer" related to the Outsider. Even if there were, it would not cause a CTD. Those are always the result of unanticipated errors the code doesn't know how to handle.

We need a lot more information to be able to help you with the CTD. First of all, is this vanilla EU/EW, or are you playing with overhaul mods, especially "Long War"?

Which mods, and what "Second Wave" game options (if any)?

What platform (Windows, OS/X, Linux, etc.) and version?

Have you prepped your system for the game according to the "Basic Guide to installing mods"?

What sort of hardware are you using? In particular, how much RAM & VRAM do you have, and is your OS 32 or 64 bit? Unexpected CTD's can be the result of running out of memory.

When you say you have "Tried a few of the troubleshooting tips", which ones?

Apologies for lack of info

I am using Long war EW v1.0 for PC (windows 7). Nothing else.

Installed into EW foler as it stated

Only mod i've used for Xcom. Game fully updated with patches etc. Auto update is on.

Second wave optons:

2. Strict screening

3. Hidden Potential

4. Training Roulette

7. Absolutely Critical

8. Liberators

11. Cinematic Mode

14. Itchy Trigger Tentacle

19. Aiming Angles

21. Hiden Trees

22. Durability

24. Friendly Skies

25. We Are Legion

26. Miracle Workers

27. Quick An Dirty

I have 8GB RAM (about another 4GB in readyBoost via a USB)

OS 64 Bit

trouble shooting steps I've tried:

Start steam in offline mode, disbaled cloud save

changed/deleted profile.bin from savedgame file

deleted all files in config folder of C:\Users\YOUR WINDOWS USERNAME\Documents\My Games\XCOM - Enemy Within\XComGame\Config

Planning on installing LW over current installation (fifth try in list)

And go from there

Also, whend it CTD opening Windows Task manager to close application doesn't work. Go to exit steam and can't due to game running. Then it loads up start screen of Xcom to chose which one to use (base or with added Enemy within). With CTD still occuring

Hope this helps?

Alright, the good news is you have a fairly typical hardware platform so we definitely should be able to get you past this.

You don't mention where you have the game installed. It is very important (vital even) that this NOT be under either of the "C:\Program Files" folders. Check out the "Basic Guide" Environment section and the articles it links to. (You are going to get pointed to the "Basic Guide" a lot! It is the accumulated knowledge of getting mods to work together over the years. Anything new we discover goes in there. I know this, because I'm the one who maintains it.)

Turn off "auto update". Any update will cause the "verify game" process to run which will wipe out your mods. Then you will have to start over anyway, even if everything was running fine. Fortunately, we are not expecting any more updates.

Anytime you want to "re-install" any mod, you need start the process from a "verified game" that has been run up to the main menu at least twice, and re-install all mods in sequence. Be sure to run through the "Checklist" when you do so you don't overlook something.

ALL mods have to make changes to the hex code of the game, which technically makes the game "corrupt" (but functional). Mods expect to see original hex code where they intend to make changes. They will not install or work if that location is already changed. Which is why not all mods are compatible. Fortunately most mods (at least those installed with PatcherGUI) create an "uninstall" file so they can be backed out if needed.

However this is not the case with LW. IT is an "overhaul" and you have to start from a "verified game" with it every time. I don't keep track of LW issues any more as they have an entire team dealing with it. But at one time there were issues with "Training Roulette" and people were told not to use it. Suggest you check in the LW "Bugs" thread and the release notes to see if that has been resolved in the v1.0 release.
