OBSE trouble

Hey Nexus forum.

I don't really know where to turn with this and I don't know if it's a stupid question or not, but here goes.

I haven't played Oblivion in years and now something have spiked my interest to pick it up again. And just like I do with every "gamebryo" game I mod the s*** out of it.

Problem is, that I can't get it to start now. What I think is causing it is that my OBSE is not supporting the version of the game that I've got, but I can't find the 1.2.0.416 patch anywhere, so I don't know how to patch the game to the supported version.

As I said I'm pretty new to this, so I'll explain what happens.

When I launch Oblivion by double clicking OBSE or via OMM I get a black screen for awhile and then it crashes (once I got the intro text that said "Bethesda softworks". You know the one at the very beginning of starting the game.) And after this black screen for about ten or twenty seconds it just shuts down, no "oblivion has stopped working" or error message, just closes.

I really hope someone know how to fix this, I was at it the entire day yesterday but with no luck. I hope you guys can help!

Thanks in advance!

If you got your game through a download such as D2D, You have to go to them for any patches. The ones at the official site will not work because of the D2D copy protection. Programs like OBSE will probably not work because of the D2D copy protection. There is a special OBSE for the Steam version though. If you have a pirate version, sorry about your luck. Don't be so cheap, buy the game.

If you have the Game of the Year version, you don't need a patch as long as you have installed Shivering Isles. For some reason, Beth put the Oblivion Patch in the Shivering isles install instead of the Oblivion install.

To find what version you have, look in the lower left corner on the loading screen. If it shows v1.2.0416 you already have the latest patch.

You only need to install the latest patch, v1.2.0416, all of the stuff from earlier patches are included.

If you have Shivering Isles, DO NOT use the Oblivion patch, ONLY use the latest Shivering Isles patch. All of the oblivion stuff is included. There is only one English version SI patch for both US & UK versions.

If you DO NOT have Shivering Isles, use only the latest Oblivion patch for the language version on your original install disk.

Be sure to get your patch from the official Bethesda site where they have FREE patches for every language version, There are 2 English versions, UK & US be sure to get the one that matches your disk.

For some obscure reason someone at Beth decided it would be a wonderful idea to move the location of the Oblivion patches in with the patches for Fallout 3. And thus break thousands of links in hundreds of thousands of help posts created over the last 6 years. http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f351/charonn0/ohgeez-1.gif After some digging I have found them again.

Bethesda site: http://www.bethsoft....wnloads_01.html

Now, if you ever had oblivion on that computer in the past, and have changed any hardware at all since then, or changed your operating system. You will need to reinitialize the Oblivion.ini file. NOT the one in the game folder, Find the right one here:

Vista or Win7 C:\users\your user name\my documents\My Games\Oblivion

WinXP C:\Documents and settings\your user name\my documents\my games\Oblivion

to reinitialize it, just delete it. then the next time you start the game it will create a new one for you.

Thanks a lot for the reply, Bben.

I tried my best to follow what you said, but I ended up in more s*** than I was from the start. It's not you, it's me ( ). I decided to uninstall the entire thing, delete it all and start over.

I do have the legally purchased copy of Oblivion, but I downloaded shivering isles and some official Bethesda addons Illegally, might have been a conflict there. (I know I shouldn't do that but I seriously can't find a single store close to me that sells shivering isles alone, only game of the year edition, which I don't have a budget for.)

After installing it again I followed your advice, got the patch from the site you said and OBSE works perfectly with all of my million mods.

Thanks for everything, it might not sound as though you did much to help me, but you did. Thanks again!

Regards,

Fraddz
