Oblivion Mod Orginizer won't work!

Recommended Posts

Ok so after gotten used to Nexus Mod Manager which haven't been fluidly experience despite it worked most of the time i've found Oblivion Mod Orginizer. However despite going through it's tutorial the mods won't work. When installing the complain about the Data folder not being set up correct however after fixing that and enabled them they still won't work.

What's wrong?

Difficult to tell by that amount of information. Essentially, neither NMM nor MO have been designed for Oblivion. But I can guarantee MO will work with Oblivion just wonderfully, it just needs to be set up the right way - unless it is completely dependent on things like the operating system, which seems to happen a lot. Are you using a Steam or a retail version of the game? Also, helping you might be easier if you could provide some more information, such as (for example, maybe?):

  • how good are you at installing mods, are you capable of installing them manually (in case you want to only ever use MO for installing mods for the game, which, I think, is the way to do it to make sure no other mod managers create conflicts, and to keep all mods under one manager)?
  • are you using OBSE, and are you launching the game via Steam (if you have a Steam version)?
  • if you have a Steam version, have you set the load mechanism for MO to script extender?
  • if the mod you are trying to install has OBSE plugins, have you manually copied them to the actual folder (because the virtual installation system MO offers does not work with OBSE plugins)?
  • if you have a Steam version, have you used OBMM to reset the timestamps on the game .bsa archives (if you have not, mesh and texture replacers will probably fail to work, also mods like DarN UI)?
  • do you have Archive Invalidation enabled in MO (in the profile management window, below the list)?
  • are you sure you enabled the mods (dumb question, but just to make sure)?
  • are you sure you do not use any other utilities for Archive Invalidation or installing mods (besides MO)?
  • are you sure the folder structure really is correct (maybe an image might help)?

If you use other tools for installing mods or enabling Archive Invalidation, I do not know how to help you. One way to make sure mods really do work the way they are intended to, is to manually "install" a mod to a folder, make sure the folder structure is correct and then add that folder to MO. Pretty much idiot proof from there on, but the part of manually restructuring a mod might be the tedious part for people accustomed to modding Skyrim by clicking a download button and having the mod manager deal all the rest. But it is nothing complicated, there are usually instruction in a readme or something, or the folder names are self-explanatory. Also OMOD and BAIN wizards some mods have do indeed offer a scripted install for Oblivion, too. But MO might not support the Wrye Bash sort of installation thing, with the "00 Core" and "01 Optional" folders (or at least it did not last I checked, though it could have changed), and it could not handle OMOD files last I checked, either (this was quite some time ago, definitely might have changed by now, so do check it). And if you use OBMM for OMODs, WB for BAIN mods and MO for the simple ones you are pretty much guaranteed to have a mess you cannot handle. And using BW and OBMM for installing mods also voids the benefits of the virtual files system thingy MO has (which is, for example, the only reason I use it, to keep my game folder clean, I do not even use the profile feature).

Installing mods for Oblivion using something like Mod Organizer can take some time and patience, but in the end it is definitely worth it. Wrye Bash and OBMM have been designed for Oblivion, so they should be pretty straightforward to use, but they do not have the virtual file system to keep the game folder as clean as possible (excluding OBSE plugins, which do not work with that feature of MO). And I have no idea how OBMM works really, I think it is even more complicated and tedious than MO when it comes to installing mods, so I have not bothered to use it for much anything, other than the Steam version .bsa timestamp reset and packing/unpacking .bsa archives. But I do know how Wrye Bash works, and one can even use WB for Bashed Patch, savegame repair and load order management via MO. Just like TES4LODGen and others.

But yes, which mod is it that you are trying to install? That might be a good place to start. :woot:
