XCOM Long War mod problems with game

When I open the menu, The thing works fine for roughly a quarter of a second, and then it starts to 'Load user preferences'. At this point the game promptly freezes. I cannot clos the game with alt+F4. I am able to alt+tab back onto the desktop, but the resolution is lowered and my background picture turns black. I cannot close the game or open any program from the desktop in this state. The only way to close the game is to ctrl+alt+delete and log out. Other things to point out:

> I am using Windows 10

> I have tried reinstalling XCOM (including under both my C: and D: drives)

> I have made absolutely certain of the location which I download the mod

> XCOM Enemy Unkonwn works perfectly fine (Not sure if this is relevant)

> I have tried all of the know ways (that I could find) to get the mod to work

> I was able to install this mod on my little brother's computer in one go and it works perfectly. (He is using Windows 10)

If anyone knows anything about this problem and how to solve it please tell me. I am a massive fan of XCOM and I would really like to play this mod.

From the sound of things, your various attempts have left the game in a confusing state (not clear whether to use drive C or D). So I'm going to recommend that you uninstall XCOM completely through the Control Panel, manually remove the INI files under your local Windows account <My Games path>\XCOM folder as well:

(i.e. "C:\Users\<your account name>\My Documents\My Games\XCOM"),

then reboot to make sure it is removed from the registry (check under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\VALVE"). Then reinstall it to anywhere other than the "C:\Program Files" (or "C:\Program Files (x86)" folder. This is to ensure that the registry has only one correct location. Be sure to follow the guidelines laid out in the "Basic Guide to installing mods" wiki article, "Environment" section.

If you intend to play with other mods, wait to install them until after you have LW working.

Note the requirement in the "Basic Guide" to run the game up to the main menu at least twice before disabling "phone home". This is so all the patches get applied. You should do this for both EU and EW because they share some files.

Now you should "enable INI loading" and "disable phone home". The easiest way to do this is with PatcherGUI (under the Options menu). Now configure the Steam Client to not use "auto update" for this game, and run in "offline" mode from this point unless the LW install instructions tell you otherwise.

From here the LW installer should have no problem as long you point it to the "\Steam\steamapps\common\XCom-Enemy-Unknown" folder and not deeper. (It can find it's way from there.)

Also, note that LW expects to hang the very first time it runs. Simply run it again and things should be fine. If not, there is an install log in the folder where you unpacked the LW archive and ran the installer. Check in that for error messages near the bottom of the log.
