Nif format version

Hoooray

Bethesda are keeping the .Nif file format.

But I am slightly worried. There is a extremely high chance that they will be using a new version of the Nif format, which means we could have to wait 5 - 12 months before The NIFtools dev team can be bothered to update nifskope to handle this version. And that means we may not be able to do any thing related to modeling for a long time and that includes porting models from oblivion mods to Skyrim.

If I remember correctly (and I might not be) the formats for Oblivion and FO3 were updated quickly. Hopefully a new version of Nifskope will be available soon after the game's release. People love mods and modding. Depending on the engine requirements there may be little or no changes to existing formats.

Well, actually I'm fairly optimistic. The hacking hex code and figuring out the new formats actually happened pretty fast and frantic at FO3 release, and some of us were releasing mods even with a hex editor before there even was a GECK available.

And keeping the .nif format actually bodes well, at least for me. I'm not a graphics artist and, well, NifSkope was the only tool I ever figured out how to use. I tried messing with the export batch files for DA:O for a day or two and got nowhere, by comparison. If I can stick with that and be allowed to concentrate on hammering funky swords instead of learning new just to get them exported, I'll be a pretty happy dude.
